Musa Saidykhan’s Case Before Ecowas Court

Musa Saidykhan, a Gambian journalist, who alleges torture and his medical doctor are to testify before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, today February 17, 2010.

He was arrested in March 2006 and detained for about three weeks before he was released. He fled the country after his release. The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), a Media NGO based in Ghana, in 2007 brought the case to the Community Court. This is the same court that declared the arrest and subsequent “disappearance” of another Gambian journalist, Chief Ebrima Manneh of the Daily Observer, as unlawful. The Gambian government is yet to comply with the court’s ruling and Chief Manneh’s whereabouts still remain unknown.
The ECOWAS Community Court has jurisdiction to hear and determine cases of human rights abuse.
