Great news! On Tuesday night, Democrats won a huge special election in Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District. Republicans were calling it a referendum on President Obama -- a major test to see if voters were ready to embrace the GOP.
They weren't.
It's funny. For months, the GOP has said that "no Democrat is safe." They've been raising expectations, even talking about taking over 100 seats in Congress.
So far they've failed to deliver. They keep losing special elections. And the GOP candidates winning in important primaries are extremists -- which makes the job for Republicans even harder.
But their failures are no accident. As a party, Democrats have poured resources into winning these fights. We're running hard-hitting ads and pushing back against every GOP attack. But most importantly, we're investing in people. With your help, we've trained volunteers across the country, called millions of voters, and knocked on thousands of doors. This is how we want to run races in November -- and it's not cheap.
We know we can beat Republicans, no matter the climate. But we need resources to do what it takes to win. Donate $5 or more to help us invest in people.
We've got plenty of opportunities in 2010 to spoil Republican hopes. They're backing candidates like Rand Paul in Kentucky -- a tea party champion who has repeatedly said that he opposes key pieces of the Civil Rights Act. They're nominating extremists like Pat Toomey -- an ultra conservative who made a fortune trading derivatives on Wall Street. In these seats and others, we'll have our chances to elect new allies for President Obama in the fall.
But to do that, we need to run the most sophisticated turnout operation for a midterm election in our party's history. Just like in 2008, we're going to organize communities across the country, mobilize the supporters who helped propel President Obama to victory, and do what it takes to get out the vote in every race that matters. While Republicans talk about winning "100 seats," we're laying the groundwork to win in every race that matters.
