GPU-USA to Organize Symposium at African Liberation Day Event!
The Gambia Press Union USA will be holding a symposium on Saturday May 29, 2010 during the Gambian-organized African Liberation Day (ALD) ceremony in Washington, DC.
The annual ALD event is a commemoration of Africa's liberation accomplishment against colonialism. In 1960 alone, 17 African countries gained independence from colonial rule. And in 1963, the leaders of 32 independent African countries met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to launch the erstwhile Organization of African Unity (OAU). The African Freedom Day, first launched in Ghana in 1958, was renamed the African Liberation Day on May 25, 1963 during this important gathering of African leaders.
The GPU-sponsored symposium will cover such topics as, the role of the media and the survival of journalists in hostile environments, the Arizona immigration law and how it affects Gambians and other immigrant communities, the role of the military in security and democratic development in The Gambia. Other panelists will include Gambian authors who are expected to present their work and participate in a book signing ceremony.
The goal of the event is to present a diverse panel to discuss a range of issues affecting The Gambia and Gambians. We are also looking forward to invite representatives and or supporters of the Gambian Government to take part in the discussion.
It is GPU-USA’s desire to create an environment conducive to a dialogue involving media personnel, civic groups and individual citizens. We believe that by increasing the level of dialogue, this will create more understanding and present an opportunity for citizens to work together on common grounds.
