Grassy fields stained red with blood
Buzzards circle below the blue sky
Firearms tossed - still smoking from powder
Soulless creatures who have faithfully served;
Now are silent or soon will be
A distant shot here or there
An angry shout or a crying whimper
Boys and men lying wounded or dead
The living tearing rags and tending to the hurt;
Or digging deep ditches to bury their brothers
But its all over - its all over
I scan and ponder the remains of war
Why is there bleeding and suffering?
What are we fighting for?
Maybe what we believe in
Or the safety of our kin
Or for our own selfish gain
But only God knows man's heart
Confusion and disturbance will always be present -
Grassy fields stained red with blood
