There is no god but Allah (SWT) and Muhammad (SAW) is His messenger. Fear and Worship only Allah alone!
Bro. Mboge,
Yes, I agree with Suntou that this forward of yours is interesting. I briefly went over some parts. More than likely his english spelling "Yarrow Mamout" is adopted from the traditional nomenclature name "Yero", added to it, a common Fulbe name "Mahmud". Interesting how history unfolds. I believe history follows a lot of trends. The fact that he is from Guinea makes me believe that there is an iota of truth to the story, especially with formation of the name.
I lived in the area (Gaithersburg) in 2000 but it never caught my attention that way. I will pay more heed to it next.

MbogeAn interesting story. Considering the fact that, some of us now easily discard our faith with the sligtest influence. I guess, what is in the heart is what the tongue or key board manifest. I am encouraged by the story. I meet lots of down to earth Gambians and Africans, whom at first sight you will dicount the strength of their faith.Do not judge the book by the cover. Thanks for sharingSuntouOn Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 10:45 AM, Modou Mboge <[log in to unmask]> wrote:
An interesting story of an African moslem slave in Christian America. He maintained his moslem faith yet was deep in the nitty-gritty of American society of the time.He owned property and had invested variedly. With thrift, hardwork, dignity he attained his freedom. Versed in Arabic, even though he came to America at age 14 and died an old African-American man. Spoke English and used poetic language. Yarrow Mamout''s (The Guinean) dignity and culturedness fascinated many thus his portrait was painted by one of the most prominent artist of the day for posterity.YJ, perhaps next time you are in the East Coast, you might venture to Yarrowsburg (Lol). Good to know a town carries your name.
