Haruna,

I am opining as a member of the Gambia-L community. And no I am not a list manager. I don't have any admin rights to add, remove or restrict any members access in any way, shape or form. I do get error reports from the list-serve, as well as subscription and un-subscribe messages. That, if you are wondering is the extent of my "list management" privileges. I hope that clears the air for you.

regards,
ousman.

Ousman,

Are you opining as a listmanager or as member of the Ellen community? Are you a list manager?
Haruna. I encourage Laye to restore the posting privileges of any member he has unilaterally restricted. Then if there is listmanagement, that body ought to deliberate and give reasons for their decisions and those decisions shared with the entire community down to the reasons offered. I used to see Tukulorr in this list but I do not in this mail. Who is Tukulorr and is he/she part of this list 5 or is Tukulorr Laye?

Haruna. US-England 1-1 draw.

All:

This is a touchy subject. Do we censure people for acting a fool or do we let them spew their obnoxious tantrums in the midst of a community and offend the sensibilities of some? The libertarian in me say, let them act a fool. If grown ups decide to call each others parents out of their name, and for some sick reason get a kick out of that, more power to them. Delisting them for that wouldn't change the fact that it happened. They can't take it back.  If we start on the path of delisting people for crude language, it won't stop the mind set that doesn't think about the consequences of the language they use in a community. It is unfortunate that the good doctor (wright) unsubscribed. That is his prerogative and he exercised it. it is a lost for him and the community, but that is the nature of the beast.

I have a tendency to use my delete key liberally. The subject line of the emails in this particular fracas gave me enough clue to discern their lack of intellectual content. Going back to read them to ascertain who start what is not going to do me any good. I tend to side on the side of protecting speech, even if it is the obnoxious kind. Gambia_Lers have contentious debates, the majority of which is civil. We shouldn't practice the tyranny of the majority by delisting members, because they offended the sensibilities of the majority.

I will stop ranting for a minute and wait for you guys to rescue me from the anarchy of my thoughts. I am pragmatist, and a cursory look at the mail stream convinced me that the perpetrators of the sludge fest have come to their senses. Now back to the world cup.

regards,
ousman.

Subject: Abusive Messages (List Managers)

All:

Sorry I had set my G-L subscription to digest of late hence missed
most of the disgusting exchange between, Muhammed, Yanks and Suntou. I
am still going through the messages to understand what conspired.
Meanwhile, I have set the subscriptions for Yanks, Muhammed and Suntou
to be reviewed before release to the list until we figure out what
needs to be done to thwart such occurrence in the future. I think you
all noticed the notable Dr. Wright has unsubscribed from the list as
direct response, I think, to the unsavory exchange going on. That
should be a reminder for the consequences of such language being
entertained on the list.

I must say, I have been one that had often lost his cool on the list;
but this is too far, too far based on what I have read so far. We need
to take some action quickly so as to send a strong message if we are
to safeguard the integrity of the list while protecting the dignity of
all members and readers of the list archive.
In order to act as quickly as possible, I would rather rely on your
understanding of the events and decision on the next action than to go
through all the messages in lieu of urgent action. Please decide on
whether we should suspend their subscriptions, de-list them for a
month or so,  keep censoring their messages for a period of time, or
any other action you may deem necessary to send a strong message
against such behavior.
Please respond as soon as possible. Thanks,

Rgrds,

-Laye
