Habib, you noticed you have not answered my questions which is at the heart of the ISSUES you wish to deal with.  What beef with Mauritanians?  Stating what obtains is a beef? I assume a lot, who is doing the counting?  I think we are all adults here and Gambians just like you and I can recall in their memory if what I said is true or false.  Habib, you are all over the place and hardly dealing with the ISSUES.  Anyway, moving on.

Joe

I dont personize when i discuss ISSUES not at individuals I did not respond to you but spoke to the general and that is what is important  again the topic is what matters to me  not who said what or why
if you want me to direct it to you i will do it by private email - no need for this messed up antagonistic approach
Joe you assume a lot and that is not objective  and destructive for our brotherly realtionships which we are all trying to promote
what makes you think I assume by the virtue of your name you dont know about mosques- or know about fatwas - that yours not mine and you definately owe me an apology for this . If you only knew what I have ben advocating for years  on this issue and this is why I take offense to such blanket  character attacks which create problems for all concerned. Thats not the way adults exchange ideas and educate each other peacefully  except if thats not our objective. I beg to differ with you
do you know what I have done to fight this racial discrimination in churches  and mosques white or arab or black ? even back home and here  I dont go about looking for attention I do it quietly , effectively and peacefully. so brother please back off now . I will not tolerate such assumsions as they are dangerous and divisive- crazy nuts are not only from a certain part of the world either there are everywhere even in so called civilized countries. ask sarah Palin for her views or Rush ,it will be all hatred and I am not into that. Life is too shrt for that.
If you have beef with the mauritanians in serrekunda then deal with them not me -honestly in Banjul where I grew up I did not see that. Again I only mentioned ISSUES not people.and for the record I have condemned the very point you targeted many times and this is why i think your approach  and response to me was inappropriate
Thats all I have to say and close this matter now.
my personal email is [log in to unmask]  and I prefer a private exchange and have asked others for that same direction to avoid anger which leads to insults and you know what. I advocate only peace and constructive exchanges
wasalaam
Habib

Well, Habib, there is no need for Garwalleh here.  I was the one who posed the questions and it is very simple for you to direct your response to me, unless it is a real strain for you. It is all part of giving respect to receive respect in return.  We are all Gambians and I spoke of events in our lifetime, not centuries ago.  Do you see Mauritanians pray at the Sere Kunda, Banjul, Bakau,or any other Mosque the locals pray at?  My question was not what Islam said or did not say about segregation in Mosques or the lack of it, but rather what actually happens in Gambia.  You may assume that by virtue of my name, I knew nothing about Mosque activities, but you cannot be more mistaken.  For decades also, folks familiar with our compound know Mauritanians rented shops, Afra place, etc..  I also lived in a Muslim household and did attend Mosque and Church as a youngster.  I can state some of the reasons they offered, but it is not necessary.  I anticipated such reactions, however, I posed the questions to our fellow countrymen and women who understood where I was going. Contrary to what you want to push here, it is indeed a racial thing and we are not going to skirt around it.  I also posed the paradox of the darker Mauritanian who is looked upon as second class citizen or worst, a slave and how even they would not attend the same Mosque with the locals, to highlight the racial apartheid and how it impacts them even away from Mauritania.  I hope you would not also contest that there is slavery still in Mauritania, as I write.  If Mauritanians will discriminate against blacks in Mauritania, why would it be far fetched that they will carry that same superiority complex to the Gambia?  We have also seen the killings between Senegalese and Mauritanians on the bases of race.  Are Senegalese and Gambians different?  No, we are only separated by a foreign language, and you know that.  In addition, I have been to Mauritania about five times and saw how they lived in their own country.  If you witness the Multitude of Mauritanians attend Friday, Nafilah, Gamo, or any prayers with the locals, please educate my ignorance.  Others that were lucky to witness that can also inform my fabricating and misconceived thoughts.  I am all ears and willing to be educated, for a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Regarding Fatwas, I think one does not have to be a Muslim to know what it means and I was not looking for the meaning.  In this day and age of Google, I think the education is unnecessary.  My drift was, how come we do not hear let's say Imam Baba Leigh, American Imams, etc., issue Fatwa's?  How come most of it, or at least the crazy ones we read about tend to come from a certain corner of the world?  That is what I posed?  The suggestion there is, that there is a perception that the Arabs tend to posture that they are more Muslim than, lets say Africans, south of the Sahara.  Why is it that we are comfortable discussing white racism but want to be queazy about Arab racism?  The last time I read, there was a Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Sharan Slave trade, no?  So, if White racism is still alive and well, why are we to pretend that Arab racism is dead?

Mr Jallow
well said , There are many people who spread a lot of fabrications and misconcieved thoughts of themselves or situations as facts when they are baseless and only exceptions to the normal . examplethat some muslims from mauritainia pray seperately which I have yet to see or hear about -definately not in the Gambia I was born and grew up in. The only so called muslims called ahmadiyyahs pray seperately but it was not a racial thing implied in a reply to this thread. Islam has never seperated races in prayers be it jummh or during pilgrimage as some american churches have- exampn a ten miles radius near where i live -there are three different methodist /baptist churches- one is completely african american , the other completely white and the other all asian -
there are also cemetries for blacks and some for whites - Islam never had such

Having said that I am the first to condemn some muslims who bring innovations to the religion just as some christians and jews do.The wahabis in saudi claim they will be the only ones going to heaven  like some jews who claim they are choosen people and the rest muslims and christians are doomed ,,but jehovas witness say the same and the wahabis too - they are nuuts and misunderstand the scriptures
one rabbi said the ten commandments revealed by the prophet Moses only apply to jews so they can covet thier neighbours wife if the are non jewish ie christians or muslims  same too they can give false testimony against non jews plus kill them also - that was his personal mis interpretation and i know most jews are not that nor believe in the crap
 thought by the rabbi
we have insane muslim clerics who recruit other people s children and not thiers-like the christmas underwaer bomber
on friday nightline had a very detailed report of three people who claimed they were christ the sons of God ( astahfurallah) on friday june 11 thecheck it out - very detailed reports and pics to be revealed by national geographic === a  russian, a british and a philipino who all claim to be christ and reap poor people off -- a must see
no one is forced to join any religion so blaming the race of the preachers is not the right message = I encourage everyone to investigate themselves rather than blame others for our woes

your description of fatwas is accurate and i also want to find out and investigate this so called stupid fatwa fro a weird cleric

it does not make sence but blaming thier race is wrong also - ihope this point is well taken as a constructive approach rather than a critism

i will find out and thanks again
sincerely
Habib

Koto Bailo,

Greetings. I am glad you like this one. This one is different from Yuse's boys' reportage (You laugh!), I mean that reporter about the adult-breast feeding episode. (Laughs!) Huh! I couldn't in my own world imagine it.

I asked three learned scholars; one from Senegal, and two from the Gambia. I will also ask an Egyptian Sheik who understands the hadith and Quran well -a very learned man, Sheik Edrish Walleed, Imam of the Daral Farooq Mosque in minneapolis MN, and a lecturer at the Islamic University located in Minneapolis/Robinsdale. Once I get done, I will compose it for all. I think clarifications on such arising problems are necessary. It will station those of us who believe and practice Islam. It will reveal the "innovations", misconceptions, as well as the spearheaded empty anti-islam rhetorics.

In response to Joe about his questions then, the following is accurate about "Fatwas".

'Fatwa' is just a ruling by expertis in the area of the Quran (God's book) and hadith (saying of the Prophet), the same way a constitutional guru, a legal mind, etc…will give an opinion on a legal matter. The revelations are unquestionable. The limitations of human thinking compared to God's wisdom is just that perfect answer. If we say Africans were indoctrinated into religion, we might as well ask, what happened at Nuh's ship? Where were Africans then? What happened to our umblical cord lineage to Adam & Eve?

Personal judgment though is subjected to the usual human biases. "Fatwas" are issued when communities and nations (Muslims) are faced with some arising crisis (good, bad, unknown, threatening, etc…), so solutions can be developed that can arrest the problem. Fatwas in themselves are not bad. What is bad is when innovations are added to religion without backing from the Quran or hadith in the form of Fatwas, or when the human biases affect our ways of responding to situations.

The above I have never heard of. I think Uncle Habib made some good observations. When it comes to stories like these, I am a little preserved. Why? Because both the story tellers (writers) and sheiks (just humans) can be just themselves, with agendas, etc…the same way Bin Laden is issuing "jihad" fatwas while we all disagree with him.

thanks bro. "Bidoh fala jombaghjoo" please advise....................
