The aphorism, "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he," not only embraces the whole of a man's being, but is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.

As the plant springs from, and could not be without, the seed, so every act of a man springs from the hidden seeds of thought, and could not have appeared without them. This applies equally to those acts called "spontaneous" and "unpremeditated" as to those which are deliberately executed.

Act is the blossom of thought, and joy and suffering are its fruits; thus does a man garner in the sweet and bitter fruitage of his own husbandry.

Thought in the mind hath made us. What we are
By thought we wrought and built. If a man's mind
Hath evil thoughts, pain comes on him as comes
The wheel the ox behind . . . If one endure in purity
of thought joy follows him as his own shadow - sure.

Man is a growth by law, and not a creation by artifice, and cause and effect is as absolute and undeviating in the hidden realm of thought as in the world of visible and material things. A noble and Godlike character is not a thing of favor or chance, but is the natural result of continued effort in right thinking, the effect of long-cherished association with Godlike thoughts. An ignoble and bestial character, by the same process, is the result of the continued harboring of groveling thoughts.

Man is made or unmade by himself; in the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace. By the right choice and true application of thought, man ascends to the Divine Perfection; by the abuse and wrong application of thought, he descends below the level of the beast. Between these two extremes are all the grades of character, and man is their maker and master.

Of all the beautiful truths pertaining to the soul which have been restored and brought to light in this age, none is more gladdening or fruitful of divine promise and confidence than this - that man is the master of thought, the molder of character, and maker and shaper of condition, environment, and destiny.

As a being of Power, Intelligence, and Love, and the lord of his own thoughts, man holds the key to every situation, and contains within himself that transforming and regenerative agency by which he may make himself what he wills.

Man is always the master, even in his weakest and most abandoned state; but in his weakness and degradation he is the foolish master who misgoverns his "household." When he begins to reflect upon his condition, and to search diligently for the Law upon which his being is established, he then becomes the wise master, directing his energies with intelligence, and fashioning his thoughts to fruitful issues. Such is the conscious master, and man can only thus become by discovering within himself the laws of thought; which discovery is totally a matter of application, self-analysis, and experience.

Only by much searching and mining are gold an diamonds obtained, and man can find every truth connected with his being if he will dig deep into the mine of his soul. And that he is the maker of his character, the molder of his life, and the builder of his destiny, he may unerringly prove: if he will watch, control, and alter his thoughts, tracing their effects upon himself, upon others, and upon his life and circumstances; if he will link cause and effect by patient practice and investigation, utilizing his every experience, even to the most trivial, as a means of obtaining that knowledge of himself. In this direction, as in no other, is the law absolute that "He that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened"; for only by patience, practice, and ceaseless importunity can a man enter the Door of the Temple of Knowledge..........James Allen

"Now, for the benefit of those of you who have studied the mental sciences, either Religious Science or Mind Science, I would like to say that this is a completely different field of activity than the one I am revealing to you in The Infinite Way, because it is true
that with the power of the mind you can produce effects in the human world. I know that because I have studied not your mental sciences, but I have gone back to those who originally were the masters of the mind, those who knew and practiced the powers of mind, and know far more about it than what you are studying. And I do know this, that with the power of your mind, if you would imbue your mind with statements of truth, affirmations of truth, realizations of truth, you could produce harmony for yourself, your relatives, your friends, patients, students, there is no question about that. But I also call to your attention that this is not God living, or God healing, for this reason. You can use the power of your mind for evil. Your mind will work equally for evil or for good whichever way you determine to direct it. Of course it may be that you have an innate nature, and undoubtedly you have or you wouldn't be in this class, which would not permit you to use your mind for that purpose, but that doesn't mean that you couldn't if you wanted to." ~Joel

Subject: May God bless us

The Grace of God cannot enter the mind or consciousness of an individual bearing hate, greed, lust, animality, or these intense selfish modes and means of life. Oh yes, when there is an inner longing for God that transcends one's evil..... Let me put it this way. It really makes no difference how evil a person is at any given moment, it really makes no difference what their present sin of omission or commission may be, they need make no effort to get rid of them or to stop them if within them there is the desire to know God aright. No one need engage in psychological means to change their nature, or to repress their evil instincts, or their evil thoughts. As a matter of fact, these never succeed. You must always remember that our greatest; when I say greatest I mean in name; psychologists have openly acknowledged that they have never yet witnessed a healing through psychology. And only last week a meeting of psychiatrists acknowledged that they have never yet witnessed a healing through psychiatry. So there is just no use of applying the psychological or psychiatric approaches to your life, since at least up to this present moment, no principle has been discovered in them which could help you.

In the same way He teaches forgive seventy times seven. "Forgive, do not hold anyone in condemnation, " even the woman taken in adultery, or the thief on cross, or even Judas Iscariot, rather, "Father forgive them, they know not what they do." It makes no difference whether they are stealing, robbing, cheating. It makes no difference whether it's adultery in one form or another. It makes no difference what form of sin it is, it's all done in ignorance. There are no spiritually enlightened people who do those things, therefore, it must be those who are in spiritual darkness. Can you not forgive them when you know that what they are doing they are doing only through their ignorance and for no other reason? Because they do not know any better, they do not know how spiritually to attain their good." ~Joel

Subject: HELL EXPLAINED

BY A CHEMISTRY STUDENT
The following is an actual question given on a University of Arizona chemistry
mid term, and an actual answer turned in by a student.

The answer by one student was so 'profound' that the professor shared it with
colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure
of enjoying it as well :

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs
heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools
when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to
know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are
leaving, which is unlikely.. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul
gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how
many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist
in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion,
you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since
people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go
to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of
souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of
the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature
and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand
proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter
Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell
breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, s0
then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that,
'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account
the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and
thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The
corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it
is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct..... ....leaving only
Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last
night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.'

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED AN A+.

Subject: radical emptiness

Radical Emptiness

To the extent that the fire of truth wipes out all fixated points of view, it wipes out inner contradictions as well, and we begin to move in a whole different way. The Way is the flow that comes from a place of non-contradiction - not from good and bad. Much less damage tends to be done from that place. Once we have reached the phase where there is no fixed self-concept, we tend to lead a selfless life. The only way to be selfless is to be self less - without a self. No matter what it does, a self isn't going to be selfless. It can pretend. It can approximate selflessness, but a self is never going to be selfless because there is always an identified personal self at the root of it.

Being selfless isn't a good, holy, or noble activity. It's simply that when there is no self, selflessness happens. This selflessness is very different from having a moralistic standpoint. When action is selfless, it tends to do no harm. It tends to be the salvation, the secret alchemy that awakens and removes conflict. It's a byproduct of not having a self. It just so happens that reality is overflowing with goodness and love.

This is radical emptiness - where everything is arising spontaneously. There is no more need to discriminate with the mind between what seems to be the right thing or the wrong thing to do. In ego-land it's helpful to have an ego that can discriminate between right and wrong, but at a certain point, that's not what you are operating by. You are operating by the flow of the Tao, which is a higher order of intelligence. You don't need to intellectually discriminate anymore because the Tao discriminates without discriminating; it knows without knowing; it moves without moving. There is no sense of being enlightened or unenlightened. Since there is no self, there is nothing to be enlightened or unenlightened.

We can talk about enlightened beings and non-enlightened beings, and conceptually that has a use. But when there is no self, when there is radical emptiness, the whole enlightenment thing is sort of irrelevant because reality has become conscious of itself, which is enlightenment. That's what is often missed. People believe that enlightenment is an improvement on reality, like becoming a super human being or God-knows-what. But enlightenment is when reality is awake to itself as itself within itself.

Subject: THE DISSOLVED MIND

Efforts to quiet the mind or to ignore thoughts cannot succeed with any consistency. Only when Full Realization strikes, only when the "Oh my gosh!" moment happens--only then does the mind dissolve. What to consider meanwhile? It is true that, if you are instructed to "avoid thinking about an elephant," the only thing that you can think of is an elephant. So, what is the answer? The answer is not to try to be rid of a disturbing thought. The answer is to ask when a thought is interrupting the peace, "WHO is thinking that thought?" Only by relinquishing belief in the false identities that inspire thoughts can the thoughts come to an end. Only by abandoning the "this" and "that" in such beliefs as "I am this" (role) or "I am that" (role) will the peace and quiet of only the "I Am" ever happen.

The "mind" is the instrument that supports your personality with thoughts, and those thoughts are the instruments that will forever prevent "peace of mind"; in fact, there is no such thing as "peace of mind." There is only peace if freed of the "mind."

Consciousness is rooted in the Absolute. The brain is rooted in the elements. The `mind' is rooted in wrong programming and faulty conditioning and lies and concepts and ideas and superstitions and falsehoods.
You are in a play, playing a role, and believing that the role and the play are both real. Why would you believe such nonsense? Because "your mind" is the playwright, the author of every scene.
When Maharaj said, "You are not in the world...the world is in you," what did he mean? He meant, "You are not in the world," that is, there is no "you" that is real or in any world. "The world is in you" means that the world is in your "mind" and is nothing more than a figment of your programming- and-conditioning -induced imaginings.

Everything that is said here is to be used to get rid of another false belief until all ideas and emotional intoxication and beliefs are gone and nothing remains but the unstated understanding. Only then can the constant churning and re-churning of the false beliefs of the corrupted "mind" finally cease.

What is that inner resource, that inner guru? It is the vestige of pure consciousness that remains, deeply buried beneath the waste called "your mind." "Your mind" obscures the consciousness because that "mind" is so marred with its belief in lies and superstitions and all of its "knowledge," all that learned ignorance, that it leaves you insane…so insane that you don't know Your Self and so insane that you believe the lies and dreams of the planet.

If your body has disappeared, how can any person remain? And if no person remains, how can a mind remain?

In order to know (the great) Reality, you must be sane. In order to be sane, you must be out of your mind.

For their suffering to end, persons must understand the functioning of the totality; must see that all suffering is rooted in the assumption of ego-states as false identities; must realize that they have no "mind" but instead are being driven by the "minds" of others (which they now think is their own "mind"); must be aware of the fact that a "mind" is nothing more than the storehouse of all the lies and beliefs and ideas and concepts that must be cast aside in order to end human suffering; and must see the limitations of doingness but the timelessness and limitless nature of beingness... and non-beingness as well........
