YJ,

Thanks for the wishes, however, July 4th means nothing to me. Had my place
of abode been the USA, i think it might be different. 4th July 1776 when
Washington and his gang (America's Founding Fathers) declared independence
from Great Britain our lot (Africans) were not included in the lofty claims
of freedom and rights contained in the declaration regardless of the fact
that many Africans died in the war of independence. African-Americans
remained chattel slaves and unequal citizens for many decades. It took
nearly 200 years for the lot of Africans to become equal citizens. This was
not given on easily but was attained through lynchings, sit-ins, boycotts
and political activitism of great men and women who demanded and took their
rights from a fraudulent democracy. What made America great and democratic
and maybe good for immigrants today for me is anchored not on 4th July but
on the Civil Rights ACT enacted 2 July 1964. This day symbolically is the
day when all Americans regardless of ones' hue really started to be
independent from all forms of oppression.

For those of you who find meaning in July 4th I wish you an enjoyable
anniversary and may you live to witness many more to come.

Happy July 4th to you YJ, family and friends.
