Gambian and Friend of The Gambia Thursady 22nd July is The Gambia Day of Action. The Demonstration is Taking place in two venue in London. Please for those coming the meeting point is at Trafalgar Square at 12pm. The Day of Action will first start at Nigerian High Commission at 9 Northumberland Avenue London WC2N 5BX Nearest Tube is Charing Cross on Northern and Baker Loo Line at 12.30pm to 1.30pm. While we are at Nigerian High Commission two person will be dispatch to hand our protest petition to Jarvis Matiya Human Rights Adviser at Common Wealth Secretariat at Marlborough House.

From the Nigerian High Commission we will then proceed to Senegalese Embassy at 39 Marloas Road, Kensington London W8 6LA Nearest Tube High Street Kensington on Circle, District and Picadilly Line. ( About 50 T-Shirit are available and also campaign information).

Dear Sections and Partners, 

Thanks for agreeing to join Amnesty International on the Gambia: Day of Action (DOA) schedule for  the 22 July 2010.  This email have three parts: 
1.the first part contains basic information for your participation in the campaign. 
2. he second part contains what you will  expect from us. 
3. the third part is on what we expect from you. 

 A. basic Information: 
1. DOA participating countries and cities: 
This year, demonstrations, lobbying and press conferences will be held in 14 countries and 19 cities. These include: (1) New York, Washington DC, Seattle (USA); (2) London, Glasgow (UK);  (3) Stockholm (Sweden); (4) Amsterdam (Netherlands); (5) Dakar (Senegal), (6) Lagos, Abuja, part Harcourt  (Nigeria); (7) Accra (Ghana); (8) Cotonou  (Benin); (9) Lome (Togo); (10) Burkina (Burkina Faso); (11) Bamako (Mali); (12) Abidjan (Cote d’ Ivoire); (13) Freetown (Sierra Leone) and (14) Monrovia (Liberia).   



2. Campaign Objective: 
The objective for this campaign is:  ‘By 2011 the international community will raise more human rights concerns with the Gambian government.’  For the purpose of the DOA, this objective has been broken into four points: 
1. The DOA will help to raise Gambian human rights concerns with influential international and regional actors (with lobbying and media work); 
2. The DOA will provide Gambians in the Diaspora an opportunity to form a strong, international network of activists that can respond to human rights violations in the Gambia; 
3. African regional systems will prioritise Gambia’s deplorable human rights record; 
4. IGOs (especially the UN) will prioritise the need to guarantee the protection of human rights in Gambia, before the next election in 2011 (using on-line action) 

3. Slogan: 
The slogan for this year DOA is: “Stop the Rule of Fear and start the Rule of Law” . 

4. Messages 
The key messages are : 
1. Stop arbitrary arrests 
2. Stop torture 
3. Stop enforced disappearances 
4. Stop unfair trials, and 

5. Cases: 
The three cases that will highlights the above violations are: 
1. Chief Ebrima Manneh – Journalist and Victim of enforced disappearance 
 2. Edwin Nabolisa Nwakaema – HRD and victim of arbitrary arrests 
 3. Femi Peters – politician and victim of unfair trial 

6. Targets: 
The States and institutions we are targeting for this year are: 

Nigeria   
Senegal 
United kingdom 
United States 
African Union 
European union 
Commonwealth 
ECOWAS 
African Commission 

7: recommendations: 
The recommendations for this year are: 
  
Amnesty International and partners calls on the above targets to urge the Gambian government to: 



Immediately and unconditionally release Chief Ebrima Manneh, Edwin Nabolisa Nwakaema and Femi Peters, as they  are prisoners of conscience, detained solely on account of their legitimate exercise of freedom of expression 
Implement the ECOWAS judgement on Chief Ebrima Manneh’s case 
Stop human rights violations and comply with the Constitution of The Gambia and the country’s international obligations under the African Charter regarding to the right to liberty, freedom from torture, right to fair trial, freedom of expression and association 
End incommunicado detention and enforced disappearances, and ensure that security personnel who engage in these practices are brought to justice in fair trials; 
Grant access to all prisoners; 
Establish an independent and international commission of inquiry to investigate the whereabouts and fate of victims of enforced disappearance and ensure that those responsible for these human rights violations are brought to justice in fair trials; 
Establish an adequately resourced independent human rights commission. 
8. 4. Web Component: 
The web component of the campaign is designed to generate and sustain online activism.  This will include: 

8.1. Visibility on the landing page of amnesty.org: the West Africa team aims to have the public statement available, and pictures of last year’s demonstrations on the landing page. 

8.2. Web feature/dedicated page: the team hopes to have a dedicated page that will have a summary of the campaign, the campaign digest, the on-line petition, a background paper and a facebook page, with links to videos, pictures, reports etc. 

8.3. Livewire: There will be a livewire component that will display the pictures and blogs of activities from each city. 

8.4. Web action/petition: The IS team is developing an email petition that will generate as many signatures as much as possible. The results will be presented widely, to put pressure on actors such as regional and EU bodies to ensure a better human rights protection mechanism before the next election. 

8.5. Phone Blog: The team wants sections and partners to send phone blog updates while the various activities are going on. 

8.6. Web Clips:  a 5 minute video on the purpose of the campaign that will be on online, including the face-book page 

B. What you will expect from us: 
We will be sending you campaign materials and media packs  for the next few days. 
The campaign material will be DHL to you in two batches. These materials will include:

T- Shirts (the number depends on your planned event)

banners (for some section and partners 
Information sheet (very few copies in print, but electronic copy will be sent)

c. What we expect from you:- 
This year we expect partners to send as much information and pictures of the event as possible and quickly too. This will be immediately uploaded to the web page for the campaign. To be specific this is what we expect: 


Send summary information on the outcome of your event (not more than 3-4 paragraph) this will go on the web as a blog message 
Send pictures of the event (  send your 5 best picture first, you can send others later) 
Send us quotes of any public officials or embassy or high commission staff) 
Send list of media interest or interview granted or media organisations that covered your event so that we can monitor the coverage 
Scan and send any publication of the event in your local media 
encourage people in the your country to take online action and sign the petition  (we can discuss with you the best way to do this) 
d. Co-signing the press release: 
This year we want all organisations we are working with and all coalitions’ members to co-sign the press release. If you agree with the campaign objective, slogan, messages and recommendations above. Please send an email that you want your organisation name to be included on the press release (even if you are not doing a DOA) and if your coalition members agreed also, send the list of organisations in your coalitions. Do note that the Press release will be short and focus on the basic information above. You will need to send this mail to me latest by 17 July 2010. We will send you an embargo copy by the 20 July and if you change your mind, we can still delete your organisation name from the list. 

e. Media strategy: 
  Amnesty International will focus mostly on international media organisations. You will be expected to generate media interest in your country and get media organisation to cover your event. Priority should be given to online media (because we send the link around easily). We will also do the following:   

We will send you Q & A  that will help media spoke persons 
We arrange for you to be interview by Gambian online editors on the 22 of July. (we will send you a draft schedule) As we move towards the last phase of the preparation, let me recap what follow –up information you will be expecting from us:
