Alhaji Yahya Jammeh has declared that he will not campaign in the upcoming 2011
Presidential Election, saying he is optimistic of a landslide victory. President
Jammeh made this declaration Monday night while addressing thousands of people
during a meeting in Farafenni, as part of his 'Dialogue with the people tour'."I
will never work for any opposition in this country anymore and I will not beg
you the Badibunkas and Kiankas to vote for me, whether you join the APRC or not
I will win," he averred, and continued:"Come 2011, whether you vote for me or
not, I will win and I will not beg you the people of North Bank Region,
especially Salikene and Njaba Kunda to vote for me. If you want development you
have to join the majority and support me but if any area chooses to be with the
opposition, let them go ahead and expect no benefit from my government.What I
did for you, in the past 400 years of British rule [and 30 years of the First
Republic] you were not able to get it." The Gambian leader reminded the people
of NBR that before 1994, traveling in the region used to be a nightmare for
them. "In fact, what I had expected you to ask me and what you have asked were
quite different, but be assured that your concerns are noted," he said.The
president made it very clear that he will not and will never beg anybody to vote
for him, and that no coup can remove him as he came with a clear mission and has
to accomplish that mission until such a time he wants to retire and hand over
the mantle of leadership. He then told the people of Salikene in Central
Baddibou to manifest their support to him in the next presidential election,
citing them [Salikeneh] and Kiang West as the two major areas that form the
majority of the opposition, and urged them to either change or forget about his
government's development. Speaking earlier, Mamadou Tangara, the minister of
Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, who doubles as
the liaison officer for NBR, thanked the people of the region for coming out in
large numbers to welcome the president and entourage, adding that there could be
no meaningful development in any nation without progress. He informed the
gathering that the major water project underway in the region is near completion
and that the demand for the expansion of potable drinking water projects will
soon be a thing of the past. Responding to some of the issues raised by the
people in the area of accessibility to some farm inputs and the price of
fertilizer, Kalifa Kambi, deputy minister of Agriculture assured that the
government would look into the price as demanded by the farmers to see how best
they can make it affordable for everyone.He also advised those who appealed for
the government to help them separate salt water from fresh water in their farms
for effective rice cultivation, to write a proposal to the Participated
Integrated Water Management Programme (PIWAMP) outlining their request. Other
speakers at the meeting included Momodou Kendeh Dibba, chief of Central
Baddibou District ; Ebrima Ansu Tamba Jammeh, chief of Illiassa District; Modou
Cham, on behalf of the Gambia Transport Control Association, Farafenni Branch;
and Honourable Lamin Jammeh, National Assembly member for Illiassa among
others.The meeting was chaired by Hon. Suku Singhateh, National Assembly Member
for Lower Baddibou and APRC desk officer for NBR and was characterised by
donation of sheep and bulls to the president by various chiefs and some
businessmen as appreciation for the development projects he brought to the
