Monday, January 03, 2011
The First Lady of the Republic Saturday gave out a sum of D500, 000 to the 'First Babies of the Year', at a presentation ceremony held at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) Maternity Ward in Banjul.

Her Excellency Madam Zainab Yahya Jammeh was warmly received upon arrival at the hospital by the executive committee of Operation Save a Baby, before proceeding to inspect the Maternity Theatre within the Maternity Ward. Speaking at the occasion, Madam Zainab Jammeh, on behalf of herself and the Gambian leader used the opportunity to wish all Gambians a happy and prosperous New Year and prayed that Allah makes this year one of happiness, good health and blessings for the country. She then declared that 2011 is special for her, and as such, she wants to make a special donation. She said: "The donation will be an amount of D500, 000 to the First Babies of the Year; D100, 000 to the First Baby of the Year; D100, 000 to the First Baby Girl of the Year; D100, 000 to the First Baby Boy of the Year; and D200, 000 to the First Twins of the Year. Inshallah, we will continue these initiatives every year."

Giving a run-down of this year's births in sequence, Tombong Saidy, chairman of the Operation Save a Baby Committee, disclosed that one Kaddy Khan, a resident of Sinchu Alagie in the West Coast Region, gave birth to the first baby of the year two minutes after midnight. He added: "Sukai Jobe, a resident of Manjai, gave birth to the first baby girl of the year 15 minutes after midnight, Sally Camara of Bansang in the Central River Region, gave birth to the first baby boy of the year, while Fatou Njie, a resident of Allen Street in Banjul gave birth to the first twins of the year."Madam Zainab Yahya Jammeh then presented the cash to the lucky mothers, while a representative of Sally Camara, the mother of the First Baby Boy of the Year received the money on her behalf.

Institutions such as Gamtel, Trust Bank Limited (TBL) Social Security and Housing Finance Cooperation (SSHFC) and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) who annually compliment the efforts of 'Operation Save A Baby', also presented an amount of D25, 000 each to the mothers of the First Baby of the Year, First Baby Girl of the Year and First Twin Babies of the Year, while a representative received on behalf of the mother of the First Baby Boy of the Year. D15, 000 out of the amount from the traditional sponsors will be used to open a savings account for each of the babies.

Dr Ousman Nyang, the chief medical director of the RVTH thanked the First Lady on behalf of the beneficiaries and used the opportunity to wish her a happy New Year. He further stated that Gambian women have nothing to say but to thank and pray for the First Lady's good health and progress. Nyang equally thanked the 'Operation Save A Baby Committee' for their hard work and effort in organising such a worthy cause. The First Lady wrapped-up the occasion by visiting other mothers and their new babies within the maternity ward.

In a brief interview with Daily Observer, the public relations officer of Gamtel, Amadou Touray said they want to compliment the efforts of the First Lady, adding that it is also part of their policy in fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities. Olailekan Sanusi, the managing director of GTBank also echoed similar sentiments. This year, 2011 marks the 11th year of existence of 'Operation Save A Baby' through the continuous support and guidance of the First Lady as the chief patroness; and the support of the Gambian leader. The initiative continues to compliment government's efforts in developing the health sector and Gambians in general.
