President Jammeh holds talks with UN special envoy

The president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh Friday morning held talks with a United Nations special envoy, Said Djinnit, who is also head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) during a courtesy call on him at State House in Banjul.

The top UN diplomat, who was accompanied by a high ranking delegation to the presidency told reporters in an interview shortly after his closed-door meeting with the Gambian leader that they discussed an array of sub-regional and regional issues affecting peace and stability in the African continent.

Djinnit, whose UNOWA institution is entrusted with the overall mandate of enhancing the contributions of the United Nations towards the achievement of peace and security in West Africa, said: "I am very happy with the opportunity given to me to be received in audience by His Excellency the president. My visit here is to consult him [the president] on a number of issues affecting peace and security in West Africa and the continent as a whole."

The UNOWA  chief explained that his Banjul visit was part of the consultation he was requested to undertake on behalf of the secretary general [Ban ki-Moon] on a number of issues affecting the stability of the continent in preparation for the next summit of the African Union (AU) and a number of high level meetings convened on the margin of the summit to discuss issues such as Ivory Coast, Somalia, Guinea, Sudan, and Guinea Bissau.

He added: "So all these issues, I was able to get the views and the expectation of the president and of course I was able to explain the role the United Nations have been expected to play in Ivory Coast especially in the electoral process and I informed the president of some of the details regarding the role of the United Nations and he was very pleased with the explanations provided."

Said Djinnit told reporters that he had conveyed the message of the secretary general that he counts on him [President Jammeh] personally and other leaders of the sub-region to work together in seeking peaceful solutions to crises affecting stability in the continent, West Africa, particularly in the case of Ivory Coast.

The special envoy also revealed that the Gambian leader during the discussion reiterated his position to help promote a peaceful solution to the crisis in Ivory Coast, while underscoring the views of the secretary general that all institutions involved – the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) the AU and the UN should come together in support of an early peaceful solution to the crisis in Ivory Coast.
