Renowned Gambian entrepreneur and proprietor of the Jah Oil Company, Hamidou
Jah Thursday donated 5000 liters of fuel to the government of The Gambia.

The fuel, which was earmarked for use during celebrations of the country’s
46th Independence Anniversary, was received on behalf of the president of
the Republic by the secretary to Cabinet, Ebrima O Camara during a
presentation ceremony held at State House. Speaking at the occasion, Ebrima
Camara expressed the Gambian leader’s thanks and appreciation to the
benefactor for the donation, describing it as not only timely but exemplary.
He also acknowledged the benefactor’s contributions to government, while
underscoring that from all accounts, Hamidou is a role model for the youths
of the country.

Camara noted that Hamidou’s life demonstrated that he is a man of vision in
that he has been able to achieve all what was mentioned within a very short
space of time with dedication, despite not having had any formal education.
“His contribution to agriculture, trading, operating service stations all
across the country are worthy examples that our youths definitely need to
emulate,” he added. The Cabinet secretary described Hamidou as a role model
for the youths, stressing that he has proven those youths that choose to
travel dangerous waters to cross over to Europe in search of greener
pastures wrong. “Hamidou has proven that that you don’t need to even cross
the borders as one can have all the wealth in this country and the only way
of achieving that is by being industrious with a sense of vision.

“For the youths I think it is already clear that His Excellency’s government
has provided the enabling environment and all the opportunities there for
them to excel,” he stated, while reiterating the Gambian leader and his
government’s appreciation to Hamidou Jah for the move. Camara also implored
on those employed by Hamidou not to relent in giving him all the necessary
support. Presenting the item on behalf of the benefactor, Lamin A Janneh,
administrative manager of Jah Oil said this is not the first time they are
contributing towards national development, while pointing out that their
company is Gambian-owned. He spoke at length on Hamidou Jah’s attitude
towards national development as well as his entrepreneurship, which he said
started a long time ago with his father.

Janneh disclosed that Hamidou is not only involved in fuel business but also
[has] a banana plantation, as well as general merchandise. He said Jah Oil
presently has 16 registered filling stations across the country and 74
people on its’ payroll. “Hamidou had donated to the president’s
back-to-the-land call, and last year we donated 5000 quantity of liters for
the national day. We also donated to the July 22nd celebration,” he further
disclosed.

This, he posited, is borne out of their strong conviction that as Gambians
such national events mean a huge expenditure for the government,
consequently the citizens must not sit and wait to participate as it is
their primary responsibility to compliment the efforts of the government
since it cannot do it alone. He then seized the opportunity to crave the
indulgence of the citizenry support such an enterprising young man, whom he
said has gone very far in business. He equally challenged the youths to
learn from Hamidou’s experience that it can be possible in the country. “I
will also want to emphasise that Hamidou sponsors orphans in the country;
children in schools,” he stated, adding that Jah is all out for all
Gambians.

The press officer at State House, Momodou Saidy, who chaired the occasion,
also hailed Hamidou Jah for the move.
