Mr. Jaiteh and all,

I am happy to take part in this noble educational project. I will shoulder the publication at Gainako including editing the document as appropriate. It can be time consuming but worths the sacrifice.

Please send any publication materials to [log in to unmask]. We will provide free space for any project of this nature.

You can always count on my cooperation.

Regards

Demba

Yero,
This is exactly what I am looking for. You have all my blessing to go ahead with updating the names section. I am confident that Saiks will be supportive the proposal. I will suggest that we consider expanding the list to include common surnames and ultimately adding etymology of names and surnames. I understand such a task can be daunting but will certainly be a great value-added proposition.

The trick is to take advantage of online etymology resources,  crowd-sourcing and other social media.
The following resource pages may help us define what we want included. Ultimately we would want to limit ourselves to "Gambian" names.

http://www.meaning-of-names.com/

As for Notable Gambian - I compiled a similar list with the help of folks on Gambia-l. Unfortunately it needs a little more work to make it publishable. I can share that with Demba once he accepts the challenge.

Once again thanks to you all.

Upon visiting the site, I realized that Samateh already started listing some Gambians names. I think I should be able to laise with him to expand the list.

I should be able to laise with Demba as well on the column "Notable Gambians".

Good luck with the project. I look forward to getting my little input in.

For progression,
Yero.

Demba, Darbo Jula and all those who expressed interest in volunteering for the atlas project. I understand the issues that come with working with volunteers, the reason I have been working on this alone over the past 7 years. Despite the shortcomings of relying on volunteer service, I am reluctant to embrace the idea of motivating student involvement through stipends or any other monetary  compensation. First there is the issue of how much, where will the funds come from and sustainability of any compensatory scheme, ... the list goes on. Second I believe the most effective motivator will be opportunity for students to interact with established experts (content providers or editors) from whom they can learn from. This I believe will go a long way to foster an environment and culture of mentoring. It is possible that some financial rewards could be available during such interactions i.e scholarships but should not be the main driving force. As for how to publicize this and other aspects of the project, I will ask all who can to pass on the word. I am talking to folks in and outside the Gambia as to how to institutionalize the process.

For those who want to help but asking how, I have outlined the following to address similar query from a sister list - the Community of Gambian Scholars.  These are some of the ways volunteers can help.

1. As members of advisory team to help keep the mission of Atlas and provide guidance as to what can be done to realize it. This team will may be required meet with editors once or twice in the year to discuss whats done and whats planned. Any major additions (eg thematic areas) will need to be approved by this team. May sound bureaucratic but this is sometimes needed to keep the editors focused.

2. Editors- Until now the editorial process is one-man show. My goal is to have a few more who will work with content providers to determine whats deemed  fit for inclusion in the Atlas. Once content is complete the editorial board (not just one editor) will need to approve the new addition. Another layer of checks but it does help maintain editorial integrity.

3. The content providers - Content providers will work with the myself and individual editors to identify ways to incorporate the  new content, be it photographs, artwork, text or tables. For instance if Siga decides to remain only a content provider and not an editor, she will liaise with one of the editors to see to it that the material she is providing is presented according to how she sees fit. The editors job is to make sure the writeup and presentation meets the standards set by the editorial board.

let know what you think.

Dr. Jaiteh,

This is a worthy project to volunteer for. I think you need to put together a press statement distributing to our widely read online papers asking for volunteers. These are widely read papers that we need to put into good use. Many Gambians in the diaspora read these papers. Our Gambian intellectuals need to use these medium and help improve them as well.

I also think you should think outside of the box on how to expand on this... a small project engaging university students in the Gambia for a small stipend could get people more energize to work on this. Am sure the students have plenty time to devote onto this and they can be really creative.

It could also be some kind of a seminar or focus groups where this can contribute to their academic goals.

Another idea that might generate interest is organizing some form of a competition with small gifts monetary or in kind to get our smart young folks to get involve in such projects.

I strongly belief in creating value through such projects....

It would be great to get volunteers but it usually leads to half commtiment and ultimately a poor job.

We are open to placing a permanent ad on Gainako to help spread the word around for such a noble project!!!

What do you think???

Thanks

Yero,
The atlas project is meant to be collaborative so there is room for all. The idea is to allow for a much broader participation. I will suggest that you go through the website when you find time to familiarize yourself and hopefully help you identify what you can contribute.

I can be a backup incase you can't find the five volunteers. I think this is a great gesture and it must be encouraged. I am not befitting to the titles you are looking for, but can put together some progressive thoughts as contribution, especially with guidance of specifications as to what you are exactly looking for.

Good luck with the project!

Kind Regards,
Yero.
