Haruna,

This is a really sad one. Until now, I can tell you, no one ever shared with me the dot of a crime this guy committed. I am sure this is no more a surprise in our current Gambia. Just out of curiosity, what has the man allegedly done to Jammeh?

A fitting tribute by Musa Manneh on Gainako Yero. I had to drop a few tears. Thank you for sharing. Master Tamba lived a storied and rich life.

Haruna. Good day while I observe some silence.

Haruna et al,

I mourn with you all on the death of another one in the hands of the brutal regime of Yaya Jammeh. Find above another tribute to Tamba Fofana. RIP!

May the Almighty afford him peaceful repose. May Allah grant the bereaved the requisite strength to keep his life-passions burning bright. Gambia has indeed lost a great deal today.

Haruna.

Gambia: Civis Gambianus Sum: Farewell to the Educator
Civis Gambianus Sum: Farewell to the Educator
By Sheriff Kora Tyler, Texas
TYLER, TEXAS USA—From dust we come and to dust we shall return; a natural law and an irrefutable theological teaching that shall spare no mortal. It is by this act of divine decree the Fofana and the kora family of Bansang want to extend the sad news of the demise of our dear uncle, father, brother, teacher, and noble citizen Mr. Tamba Fofana who graciously took his last breathe at the Bansang hospital on March 8th 2011.
For the benefit of full disclosure to those who may not know him and in honor of his exemplary life, Mr. Tamba Fofana once saturated the news headlines a couple of years ago due to inexplicable circumstances that led to his illegal detention, an ordeal that left him and his family with indelible psychological scars to the last minute of his death.
Despite his trials in life, Tamba was an optimist who always took things in good faith and like the Jesus of Nazareth, forgave the orchestrators and agents of his detention, with the conviction that they knew not what they were doing, neither did they know the man they had in their custody. There is much more to celebrate than to mourn over the death of this good human and good citizen.
Tamba was a man of high moral piety who lived a modest and religious life. He had an enormous love for family, friends and his community as a whole. He was a global citizen, a man of value and principles whose desire for gaining and sharing knowledge and wisdom were without bounds. Tamba lived his life as an inspiration to the young, a motivator and a true role model to the stature of whom many aspired. He was an elementary school teacher who explicitly embraced the staunch belief that the surest and true way to build and safeguard democracy and development within the rural communities he served was through the diffusion and advancement of education. This was the bond he shared with his staff and students.
To his students in the classroom, Tamba was the next thing to a genius, and to the street fellow he was the ‘Bicycle Philosopher’ who never hesitated in reading or composing a letter of correspondence for his unlettered neighbor. Tamba was disabled at a tender age, and as a result was bound to the aid of a bicycle that facilitated his mobility.
Regardless of his challenges and the cultural stigma that accompanied such physical disabilities at that epoch, he was never robbed of the logical understanding and diligence that a liberal education is at the heart of a civil society, and at the heart of a liberal education was the act of teaching.
It is under this premise that Tamba spent his entire life in public service, imparting knowledge to thousands of students over the years within the length and breadth of the Gambia. He not only succeeded in installing information into the brains of the students under his tutelage, his calling was a far greater chore. He considered it a noble undertaking and a duty of citizenship to transform his students into good citizenship for goodwill of society.
Under his educational leadership, Tamba helped shaped the academic foundation of under privileged schools such as Boraba and Dobo that produced more high school Common Entrance Examination passes per capita than most well funded town schools such as Bansang and Basse in those days. Tamba’s loyalty to his country’s educational sector and dedication to service should not go unmentioned.
His unwavering commitment to his national calling has gone great lengths at producing doctors, lawyers, professors, scientists, and uncountable number of other professionals and public servants who serve in diverse walks of life both nationally and internationally. As Horace Mann once stated, “a human being is not attaining his full heights until he is educated”.
Tamba you have helped not only in enriching the life of individuals, but you have helped people realize the value of their lives and to actualize their potentials. Your kind is the true Pan Africanist. Educators of your caliber are the ones that are needed to help Africa complete its social evolution of de-colonizing consciousness. To your departed soul we bid farewell, but to your life and legacy we will live to celebrate. May God grant his mercy on your soul and may he grant your family the solace, strength and comfort during this time of trial. Ameen!
Tamba, is survived by his wife and six children. To those who want to get in touch with his family, please send an email to [log in to unmask] for further details.
