Karim,

You're right. This is a classic case of divide and rule/conquer. If you recall the manner in which the Taf-Taf Bereft of Gardens theft of Brufut Land was coordinated to first bring the land under the TDA and create artificial easement and make it possible for Taf-Taf and Yahya to dispossess the Manneh kunda folk of their Land in the name of "development", you can appreciate the current how Abbass Manneh's petition to the president could constitute "false statement to the state". The essence of a petition is to seek review and consideration where an amicable and voluntary solution is unavailable.

I agree with you that if Brufut had a strong Civic or Community Association, Abbass would've had no reason to take his petition to Yahya. Further, It appears that this was a matter between two brothers from the same kabilo. Why was Abbass forced to go outside of the kabilo to seek redress or consideration? When we make Yahya the arbitre of any and everything under the sun, we legitimize his idiotic and criminal actions.

Abbass' imprisonment is illegal and criminal. A petition by its very nature is a request for hearing or consideration. The false statement part of a petition is established at the hearing and if that false statement does not lead to intended damages for the person petitioned, this case should never have seen the steps of the courthouse. Yahya could simply respond to Abbass' petition advising that he take the matter to court or seek redress from the Alkalo Malamin Manneh. This is sheer idiocy. The state does not take petitioners to court for the act of petitioning Yahya. If Yahya takes it upon himself to hire and fire Alkalos, then citizens have no alternative but to petition his consideration when a dispute arises between any citizen and the Alkalo. This is exactly why it is more advisable for a COMMISSION of citizens ( or community elders) to appoint their Alkalos and Almamos. Why would Yahya burden himself with appointment of Alkalos and Almamos if he doesn't have ulterior political motives??? The idiot cannot think right if his life depended on it. The ulterior political motive may not come to pass when you pit brother against brother, sister against sister, etc...... And Gambians need to start using their DaarManso-given common sense. Even if I hate my brother's guts, I will not seek arbitration from Yahya. And that's even when the sky is about to fall.

Haruna. I hope the elders of Brufut can meet and go to Yahya to demand the unconditional release of Abbass Manneh. There is no case here to speak of.

Haruna
Once again thanks for your good point  and it is well noted. You have been in the center of Beta-Brufut campaign since early 2001 and your efforts in that campaign is well noted. I  have just spoke to Banka Manneh and Kutubo Manneh about the issue in hand. We have telephone conference with Anesty International campaign about Gambia Day of Action and I have mentioned Abass Manneh issue. My discussion with Banka today is either two option an open letter petition or directing talking to our people part home to stop dealing with the devil. It is shameful to any Brufut Diaspora for our people to embrace this illegal regime while tearing our community apart with silly power politic of Alkaloship from one kabilo to another.
Haruna you involvement in Beta-Brufut campaign and numerous communication you made in 2001 enable you to understand issues in our community. For your information Abass Manneh is from the same community with Banka Manneh and Dave Manneh. Banka is name after Abass Manneh's Father is the elder brother to Dr Kutubo Manneh at King Saudi University.
Early this year, Abass Manneh petition's Yahya Jammeh about land issue in Brufut between him and a Brother Malamin  Manneh who was appointed by Yahya Manneh as the Alkalo of Brufut after the sacking of my father's Brother Alhagie Yussu Sanneh.
Haruna, when the petition landed in the Office of President, he was arrested for giving false information to state officials. Matters relating to hisw petition was never investigated. He was drag into court. Earlier call Malamin Manneh the Alkalo to prevail on him that court case between him and  Abass Manneh  is unneccesary and they should solve the mater out of court for the interest of community social cohesion. The response from Malamin Manneh- the Alkalo is that Abass Manneh's problem is with the state. Haruna, it is the same dirty politics deeply dividing our people creating is  hate and deep rooted rooted social anatgonism. Brother hatee brothers, sisters hate sisters and for each, interest in national politics means alliance to regime in power for your own interest and the game of framing your brother becomes the order of the day.We are deeply concerned about the way and matter APRC polluted  OUR COMMUNITY. The  money for building that mosque was a partly a contribution the diaspora  Brufut Community till near to completion. Today it is in the news that Yahya Jammeh build the Brufut Mosque, what a misinformation. Yahya Jammeh have understand inter-faction fight between the communities while he sack the former Alkalo Alhagie Yussu Sanneh, he appointed another Alkalo Malim Manneh from another faction. Using divide and rule as a form of dirty politics to further fragment our community is the game of APRC ALL OVER THE COUNTRY..

Karim,

I share your angst over Abbass' illegal imprisonment. This Brufut Land affair as I had surmised some years back, is much beyond land and its tenure. It is an ethno-political tinderbox exploited by Yahya at every turn. Yahya will always find one or two sympathetic ears as long as he can dangle the carrots of Alkaliyaa, Seyfoyaa, and Almaamiyaa through the SIC.

I suggest the people of Brufut make the BetaBrufut group a permanent civic organization to fight for the rights of all Brufut's people or form another Community Organization through which the synergies of the great people of Brufut can be channelled. I remmembered when we worked on yielding the dispossessed fair market value for their land. The next thing I know some members surreptitiously accepted compensation given by Yahya on the advice of counsel. Needless to say, even though that averted honourable impasse, it only deferred equitable justice for another day. Taf-Taf bereft of Gardens theft of Brufut land...Encore.

Haruna.

Subject: [G_L] Abass Manneh

Folks It is sad to let you know that Abass Manneh Former PDOIS candidate for 1987 and 1992 election for Kombo North was jailed for 6 months in  Mile Two for giving false information to Public officials. It now a charge sheet for any decent citizen who wrote a petition about discontent prevailing in their communities. Abass Manneh wrote a petition about about folding Land issue between him and the political apponited Alkalo of Brufut Malamin Bojang- a close family relative to Abass Manneh, Abdoukarim Sanneh, Dave Manneh. To silence Abass Manneh and tearing the social coalition of our community what they did is to bogus charge him for false information given the fact that the said land control by the Yahya Jammeh using divide and rule strategy.
Abass Manneh is a community figure in Brufut who have render a value serve as a teacher, youlth mobiliser and village development activist. Writing a petition about current land issues in our community need to be address than sending him in Mile Two for bogus charges  for giving false information to Public Information to state officials. The imprisonment of Abass Manneh for writing petition about burnin, land issues which every regime since before Yahya Jammeh use as a political capital and thus failed to address and use it to further divide our people using inter kabilo issues of Sanneh Kunda (Suba) against Manneh Kunda is tearing families apart. We have deep rooted inter marriage and family connection. I am appearing to Banka Manneh, Dave Manneh, Kutubo Manneh, Seedy Ceesay, Pa Lamin Manneh and the rest of the concern to speak out. The folding in our community is Fadiyaa against Badiyaa. I have contact all his the jailing of Abass Manneh  his last month and the only postive response is Dave Manneh currently in India on a working visit and Kututbo Manneh in Saudi Arabia. I am alway available for what we need to do as Brufut community. It can be little to been silence is a crime!
