That's the magic word. Temporally seizing to work as a journalist not permanently as you seem to think. Sometimes what you write falls into wrong hands and endanger lives. Remember asking about invetogating Laye Fish even though he is down in jail for treason. What goes around comes around so be careful Balanba you should call yourself as it seems you never agree so I quit trying to convince you. Just remember next time someone is jailed by Yaya think before you write.

I was making the same points you made. If a journalist compete in politics, do you think he will write things about his rivals that can undermine his/her efforts?Remember when former BBC corespondent contested as an Independent candidate, he stop journalism for that period. However, when Editors and Proprietors wine and dine with senior politicians, do you think they will not be compromise? The issue is, we can disagree, mud slide, but what remain factual is that, if the head of a media organisation engages with people whose interest is power, he/she will slowly erode the principles and ethics of her profession. You cannot eat your cake and have it. Thanks in any case. Read Peter Oborne's take on media I forwarded.BolonbaOn Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 8:49 PM, Kejau Touray <[log in to unmask]> wrote:
Sutnou,Independence, professional, fair reporting and unbiased coverage is a prequisite for any media. That is why they are called the fourth estate, the other three being the judges, the government and the parliament. In the same vein the constitution preserves the rights of individual to form peaceful associations and meet and disseminate their ideas without interference from work or government. That is a fundamental and an absolute right and it is and has to be different from your professional role, if you choose to be an employee or even a journalist. Not everyone can be a businessman or a practitioner, to enter politics, do they? That is why we have ethics, some administrative rules and regulations that govern those professional actions and the rule of law to ensure people should excuse themselves if they have interest in some cases. You see not everything is black and white. This is the same bullshit, excuse my french, that Yaya uses to fire civil servants and control the whole executive. You cannot go to party or be members of a party or any group for that matter as it will interfere with your duties! Think about it for once. This is partly why we are in this mess. Politics has to be limited to a few entrepreneurs only, the chosen few in The Gambia, as you cannot even have a job in the bank, lest the bankers are labelled disloyal to the dictator.
Good positive action for talking to Malick. Touray never let down!Thanks/

KeajuSadly you jump before looking. Where did i said we should not take alignment from the West on the media matters? I think if you haven't cloud your comment before hand, you'll notice that, what I am alluding to is simply that, if we too reach the level where our institutions can operate without fear of interference from Head Of state and the like, no one will worry about the neutrality and the independence of the Press. However, many a time, folk rush and analyse without looking at deeper reasoning which leads to blind conclusion. In mature democracies, institutions like the courts or the Judicial system can dispense justice against whoever, whilst in our case such cannot happen. The police cannot be use to harass individuals base on their political leanings. If we have reach such level, let an editor openly proclaim the Lordship of a politician of his/her choice. The poeple and the system can accomodate it effortlessly, that is what I meant.Yet you try to take my remarks to an angle completely unrelated. Any how, thanks for yoru valuable comment.SuntouOn Tue, Jul 5, 2011 at 9:49 AM, [log in to unmask] <[log in to unmask]> wrote:

I did mention here about your protest that papers and journalists should be neutral which is found no where in the world. The utopia you seem to be so clinging to is your found only in your imagination. You said we should not take alignment from the west as they have mature democracies, so who or what do we take as the yardstick? Suntou's?
Ndey has all rights just like you, to join any group and it is even desirable that such high profile people take sides in politics.

You tend to present yourself, either naively or intentionally, as the most neutral person ever, the most daring ever, the most straightforward when it comes to issues relating how Gambians fight their plight. You present yourself as if you are the one who sets the standards for all to follow.

With this exercise, I am hoping we can all get to know the real Suntu or at least have a better glimpse into how you process your thoughts to help us understand what you are trying to tell us. I truly believe that you are either way too misunderstood because you think faster and wider than everyone else; or you are outright malicious in your uncanny knack for making stuff up.
