The vice president and minister of Women's Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou
Njie-Saidy, Thursday received on behalf of the Gambian leader, Islamic
Pamphlets donated by one Sheikh Tijan Lamin Cham, the Head of Department of
Arabic and Islamic Studies at Kotu Senior Secondary School, at a brief
presentation ceremony held at State House.

The 120 page-book covers a wide range of topics, designed to appreciate and
reciprocate the president 's noble efforts in sponsoring Gambian children in
different levels of education both at home and abroad. Presenting the book,
Sheikh Tijan Lamin Cham, the author, expressed delight and honour at being
received by the vice president on behalf of the president to make the
special donation. “The work is a response to the Gambian leader's call for
Gambians to take the development of the country in their hands. Today, Your
Excellency, I am the most proud Gambian, simply because the man I like in my
heart happens to accept this humble donation from me,” he remarked.

Cham assured that if he had more valuable materials than the pamphlets, he
would have donated to the Gambian leader quoting that 'the best leader is
the one who is loved and prayed for by his people and who in turn loves and
prays for his own people,'. Imam Sheriff Badjan, the vice president of The
Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, on behalf of the Council, thanked the
author, Cham for the gesture. Badjan hailed the author of the book, which
depicts the call made by the Gambian leader to develop the country. He
emphasised that no one will come from outside to develop the country for the
citizens, while calling on Muslims to unite and promote Islam. He prayed
that Allah the Almighty reward him (the author) abundantly for the gesture.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Abdou Kolley, the minister of Trade, Industry
and Regional Integration, described the donation as 'wonderful'. Like
previous speakers, Minister Kolley assured that nothing is more valuable
than what the author has done by presenting learning materials to the
Gambian leader. He quoted a hadith as saying; “The best among you is the one
who learns the Holy Quran and teaches it”. He then encouraged the author to
keep up the momentum and implored on those who have the same ability to
follow his footsteps. “The more people are enlightened, the better the
society is,” he said.

Receiving the pamphlets on behalf of The Gambian leader, VP Njie-Saidy
thanked Cham for the bold move he has taken. “It’s a great day today for
Gambians and the entire Islamic Ummah for that matter. Because, what we are
talking about today, is about what Islam has first brought to us, ie;
knowledge (reading) being the first verse sent to Prophet Muhammad (SAW),”
she said.

Dr Njie-Saidy hailed Cham for the gesture, while stressing that the books
will go a long way in propagating knowledge especially in schools. She then
used the opportunity to say that the Gambian leader's stance in promoting
Islam is there for everyone to see, adding that the country needs some of
the books in her schools.
