Cape Verde’s opposition candidate, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, 61, has won Sunday’s presidential run-off elections with 54 percents of the votes cast.

His rival, Manuel Inocencio Sousa, 60, has conceded defeat after 92 percent of the overall ballots were counted by Monday morning.

Both of them are born in Sao Velenti, the second largest city of the country and both have served as Foreign ministers of the country.

In brief remarks upon the news of his victory, Mr Fonseca pledged to maintain the political stability that the country has enjoyed since independence in 1975.

“The political stability of our country is much more guaranteed by our constitution and the majority in the house of representatives than the president,” he said.

Over 300,000 citizens are said to have voted in the polls which were held both on the islands and in 241 polling stations abroad.

More Cape Verdeans (700,000) live abroad than at home (500,000), official statistics show.

Stable democracy

Mr Fonseca promised to name a Prime Minister who will “improve the economy of the country by creating a more conducive environment for foreign investment” besides tourism which is the main income earner.
