The adoption of appropriate development is a difficult task, yet it is a decisive factor in bringing about meaningful development to the society. Therefore, policies, plans and strategies to be adopted must be diligently designed to bring about even and effective development that would support a decent livelihood. Those who are committed to achieving sound development often ensure that polices and development projects are reviewed to provide adjustments where necessary so that they can meet the ever changing needs of society. 

The reviewing of bilateral development projects by The Gambia and Taiwan shows the commitment of the two countries in the achievement of the outcomes of development and strengthening South-South cooperation. The move, which is one of the reasons for the secretary general of the Taiwan International Development Cooperation Fund (ICDF) visiting The Gambia, is by itself an indication that Taiwan is a trusted and genuine partner of The Gambia and is determined to ensure that this country emancipates itself from the bondage of poverty and underdevelopment. 

Taiwan has been playing a big role in Gambia’s development. The Asian Island nation’s immense contribution in the field of agriculture, education, health, science and technology cannot be overemphasised, while The Gambia on its part is aggressively defending the rights of Taiwan at the international stage, especially in relation to participating in the United Nations and its affiliate organisations. Having both countries sitting by the table to review development projects engendered by the bilateral ties between them would doubtless create room for greater understanding and cooperation. It would also enable the two countries to understand the impact of the projects, their shortfalls and above all recommendations from the review can serve as strategies for the improvement and expansion of the projects. 

Development requires commitment from our countries and indeed in the global community.  Effective participation in decision-making, since these decisions affect each citizen intimately, is therefore paramount for development.  It is to such participatory development that The Gambia and Taiwan are committed, hence their determination to review the bilateral development projects.  

We are optimistic that the outcome of the review would go a long way in enhancing the already strong ties between both countries; it would also ensure that the projects become more beneficial to the people they are earmarked for, thus facilitating development. Taiwan indeed has proven to be a true friend and Gambia is in equal degree appreciative and would stand by them at all times in their struggle for self-determination and freedom.
