Peace is paramount <http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/peace-is-paramount#map>Africa<http://observer.gm/africa/news> » Gambia <http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/news> Wednesday, September 28, 2011 Editorial The name Gambia has gone down in the pages of history as a peaceful country inhabited by a hospitable populace. This is why the country is widely acclaimed as the Smiling Coast of Africa. The peace and tranquillity the country enjoys did not come from the blue; our forbearers cultivated it. Nurturing that peace and tranquillity is therefore a moral obligation for every Gambian. As Gambians, we are all aware that what we have been able to achieve so far is simply due to the peace culture here. This culture of tolerance, civility and forbearance in the minds and hearts of the populace has been an attractive magnet that attracts tourists, and makes them to keep revisiting the country. That is also what is making foreign investors to choose The Gambia as their preferred destination, a safe place to commit their capital. We strongly believe that the greatness of a nation is not measured by its nuclear arsenal or size of its armed forces, but rather what it can do to advance universal peace and brotherhood; and living it by example. Herein lies our greatest strength. Even as we strive to sustain the peace in our land, we should also have it in our minds that our preoccupation with peace is a legacy we must bequeath to the younger generation who are the future leaders. We can do that by inculcating in them the virtues of honesty, selflessness, hard work and patriotism. We should also teach them to abhor all forms of intolerance, criminality, drug addiction and violence. If we do all these, then our peace would forever be guaranteed. Peace is our greatest contribution to humanity. It is our heritage. Author: *Daily Observer* -- * ***************************************************************************** GOD BLESS THE GAMBIA.
