WHY DOES THE PROJECT HAVE TO INCLUDE SALE OF LAND????????????????????????? WHY??? Why not RENT/Lease and employ the locals in the project. Why can't the Tanzanian government develop this land with the participation of the residents and citizens??????????? Why do you have to dispossess yourself of your fixed national treasure??????????????? Its like Carnegie Minerals buying sand and shipping the sand to wherever. If this grassroots report is accurate, Why is the Tanzanian government so stupid??????? Could it be that they think this is the most benign way to expel the new Tanzanians from the land??????????????? I think this matter should be discussed at the UN a bit more thoroughly.

Haruna.

Subject: [G_L] How does a President or government sell a nation's land to foreign investors???? Haruna.

Even if the contract for the sale goes through a court, I think the investor would be an idiot to rely on such a contract after a new government is created. Regardless of how valuable they think the project may be to the people. Haruna.

Dear Supporter,

One of the major contributors to the food crisis in Africa is the theft of farmland from local communities by foreign industrial agriculture giants. A clear example of these land grabs is in Tanzania where US-based AgriSol Energy wants to purchase 800,000 acres of land that is currently home to 162,000 people.

This is why I’m asking you to take action today to tell AgriSol Managing Director Bruce Rastetter and his fellow AgriSol investors to stop this project.

Most of the residents in the proposed site are from Burundi and sought refuge in Tanzania over 40 years ago. For decades generations of these former refugees have worked to successfully re-establish their lives including developing and farming the land.
If this deal goes through, they will lose their livelihoods and their community.

Please send a message to Bruce Rastetter, other principal investors, and the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania to immediately stop this project.

AgriSol is promoting this large-scale land grab as a way to pair Tanzania’s abundant natural resources with “modern” farming practices—like the use of genetically modified (GMO) crops. At the same time, AgriSol is set to reap tremendous profits from agreements that would grant them tax holidays, the use of GMOs, and production of biofuels just to name a few.

While this deal will generate massive profits for the investors of AgriSol, it will do little, if anything for the Tanzanians.
In solidarity,

P.S. It is likely that if this land grab goes ahead it will set a precedent for future land rights abuses. Please take action today. To learn more details about this issue, read the Oakland Institute's brief.
