BREAKING NEWS: ECOWAS has just announced that it will not send any
observers to the Gambia for tomorrow's presidential election. The
commission says “preparations and political environment for the said
election are adjudged by the Commission not to be conducive for the conduct
of free, fair and transparent polls”. It cites “intimidation, an
unacceptable level of control of the electronic media by ...the party in
power, the lack of neutrality of state and parastatal institutions, and an
opposition and electorate cowed by repression and intimidation”. It says
the electoral climate does not meet the minimum standards set under the
Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance for the conduct of elections.See
