STGDP Condemns The Arrest and Prosecution of Alleged Gays

http://maafanta.com/STGDPCondemnsTheArrestAndprosecutionOfAllegedGays.html

Save the Gambia Democracy Project (STGDP) categorically condemns the prosecution of Gambians and other citizens
arrested and charged with indecent practices. We are dismayed by the actions of the security forces in disrupting the
lives of these individuals. However, we are not surprised by these selective prosecutions on the heels of the twelfth
anniversary of the senseless and brutal murder of young Gambian students on 10th. and 11th. April, 2000.

It is quite disheartening to see the Jammeh regime in its true and familiar form, attempt to divert the attention of the
Gambian public from the real and pertinent issue of justice for the innocent martyrs of April 10th. and 11th. by
embarking on this deceptive act of arresting innocent law abiding Gambians and other citizens. Meanwhile, those who
heinously murdered the innocent young Gambians are roaming the streets of the Gambia with impunity.

STGDP joins all conscientious and freedom loving Gambians and friends in demanding the categorical and absolute
end to this charade, and the immediate release of all those arrested on these flimsy charges of practicing
homosexuality. If the Gambia is to become a country of laws and not of men then the real criminals, those who murdered
innocent students and those who gave the orders, should be behind bars and not innocent harmless citizens going
about their normal lives.

We further urge the Jammeh government in the strongest possible terms, to respect the universal and fundamental
human rights of all Gambians irrespective of their gender, age, tribe and sexual orientation.

We wish to convey to all Gambians that they should not be hoodwinked by the President’s religious undertones. His
statements are meant to divert the publics’ attention from the real issues confronting our nation; mainly the abject
poverty and constant violation and disregard of the constitution.

The STGDP is resolute in standing with the innocent victims of the unnecessary bullying by the government machinery
to ensure their universal human rights are safeguarded at all times. We believe that all men and women are equal
before the law and rights of a citizen to practice their beliefs and involve in any form of social activity that is not
detrimental to fellow citizens is guaranteed before the law.

We therefore demand the immediate release of the arrested individuals where it is obvious they have not done anything
detrimental to fellow citizens and or society in general.
