Socialist Francois Hollande has been elected France's new president.
He received 52% of the vote against 48% for the incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy, according to early projections. 
Mr Hollande is expected make a speech at party headquarters shortly. 
Mr Sarkozy conceded defeat shortly after the polls closed, he told supporters at hisUnion for a Popular Movement (UMP) party headquarters : 

"Francois Hollande is the president of France and he must be respected."

The incumbent also said that he was "taking responsibility for the defeat".

Supporters of the outgoing French president sobbed as Nicolas Sarkozy conceded defeat at the presidential elections.

Meanwhile, supporters of Francois Hollande celebrated outside Socialist Party campaign headquarters in Paris.
