Socialist Francois Hollande has been elected France's new president.
He received 52% of the vote against 48% for the incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy, according to early projections.
Mr Hollande is expected make a speech at party headquarters shortly.
Mr Sarkozy conceded defeat shortly after the polls closed, he told
supporters at hisUnion for a Popular Movement (UMP) party headquarters :
"Francois Hollande is the president of France and he must be respected."

The incumbent also said that he was "taking responsibility for the defeat".
