Here goes Beanstalk. And hoping your neighborhood gas station owner is not you know who:

1. Exploration and infrastructure cost has already been paid-for by you the taxpayer in the form of the famous subsidies, and then some..... That is what the API (American Petroleum Institute) lives off of currently.

2. Drilling piping and superstructure is farmed out to jobbers and middlemen - $0.25/gallon of light sweet crude. $0.30 for Canadian heavy crude.

3. Refining and distillation yields other fractionated products in addition to gasoline - Diesel-oil, kerosene, etc. Gasoline's part of that cost is $0.12/gallon

4. Environmental surcharge especially for California, Chicago, Kentucky, etc. is MORE than offset by additional charges of speciation - regular, mid-grade, premium. Oil companies have also developed additives in order to charge extra. Most of the additives are residuals of fractionating. Duh!!!

5. Tank farm storage, maintenance, and oil/water separation for offshore crude is $0.05/gal of gasoline.

6. Transport and hazmat insurance by jobbers and middlemen is $1.15/gal of gasoline. Some transporters who do not already have a profuse enough network add extra for inordinate distance (<=$0.5/gal).

7. POS (point of sale) storage, instrumentation, plumbing, hazmat, is $0.55. For gas stations who do not sell enough gasoline or who retain their supply for longer periods of time, they do not need to be in the business of selling gasoline because they will lose it all to evaporation and leak. Like your neighborhood guy from Mumbai.

8. Friggin advertising overkill is $0.02/gal max.

9. 20% profit pegs the cost at $2.63/gal of gasoline - drilled, refined, delivered to your tank. The rest is speculation, hedging, debenture, idiocy, theft, ALEC, bribery in the Niger Delta, and so on. For those states and nations who do not know enough to protect their citizens and environment, the cost cannot exceed $2.42/gal.

Beanstalk, if your neighborhood gas station owner is from Jalandar or Karachi, you need to move to another neighborhood. If you add up what you have been paying needlessly, it'll get you a mansion in BelAir.

I love you men.
Haruna.

Hernando Darbo:

Can you please provide a detailed breakdown of the $2.42/gallon price. I mean
cost, and profit margin details so that I can better argue with my neighborhood
gas station owner. I want to make sure I know what am talking about when I ask
for a lower price. Based on your info, am being screwed of close to $1 per
gallon. Help me out Hernandez!
