Since she assumes the position of Health Minister, the country’s health delivery system has been declining at an unprecedented rate. Health facilities are in complete disarray, while staff morale amongst health workers is at its lowest ebb. Our dear sister Fatim is an enterprising, and ambitious young lady, who is interested in contributing her quota towards national development. There is no doubt in our mind that she wants to see the advancement of Gambia’s health delivery system. But in the absence of a committed workforce to compliment her efforts, she will hardly make any headway towards her quest to fulfill her set agenda for the Gambia, and her people. President Jammeh, and his Government should consider investigating the demise of Sellou Jallow, and all other Gambian patients, who died at the hospital due to neglect, or poor health services. Fatim’s expertise will best serve the country well—provided that she is given the right job that suits her qualifications. The regime should appoint health professionals familiar with health issues to head the Health Ministry. This will go a long way in meeting the country’s growing demand for efficient, and reliable healthcare. It appears that Fatim is not given the necessary support, and guidance that she needs to run the Ministry efficiently. Her lack of expertise on health related matters, coupled with the infighting in Jammeh’s Government for official position seems to have aggravated the situation. In order to overcome such challenges, the regime should hire the right person to head a given Ministry. Public officials should also endeavor to keep their individual personal differences out of the workplace, and work towards the common good. Gambians should be guided by the dictates of the country’s national anthem. The Health Ministry is the main nerve of the country’s backbone. Any attempt to neglect such an important Ministry, will spell a doom for national disaster. Life is too precious to be wasted, or lose because of the lack of committed workforce to take care of our sick and the elderly. But only what Allah SWT wishes will happen and we understand that. The public are well aware that they can tell you anything, and you will post it. An educated man like you should- at the very least- first research and get your story straight. You mean to tell us that OG Sallah keeping his job, is more important than the life of Sailou Jallow, who died under mysterious circumstances? That Granny Sallah of all people is putting more value on a Government job than the life of her lost relative. Her letter to the Freedom Editor speaks volume. Why stooping that low Granny at a time, when the entire nation is mourning, and asking legitimate questions about: who must have been responsible for the murder of a great son, and also an asset to the Gambia in the person of Sailou Jallow, who died due to medical negligence? Granny also brags about her family’s success pre Jammeh era. She said they have been doing much better before Yahya Jammeh coming to power. But she is not getting the main gist of the story. We are not talking about wealth here. We are more concern about Sailou’s life, which has been recklessly taken away by some callous health workers. Listening to her Freedom Radio ranting phone call, characterized by threats of inciting others to lynch the Freedom Editor through mob justice for merely having the audacity to report about Sailou’s death, goes to show that sister Granny is not up to anything good. How dare that she can incite others to beat Pa Nderry? How dare that she can accuse Gambians in the diaspora of using Freedom Radio as an outlet to smear President Jammeh and his Government? Granny, in all fairness, I do not think you are doing justice to the late Sailou Jallow, the Gambia, and her people. The issue at hand is beyond personal interest, personal feelings, politics, and propaganda. You seem to be encouraging impunity by failing, or refusing to speak the truth. Your snap on us not coming home to help develop the country is irrelevant at this hour! This is not a question of one refusing to come home to contribute to nation building. It’s a question of how justice can be meted out to the perpetrator(s) of Sailou Jallow’s death. It’s a question of how Gambia’s health sector can be accountable to its patients, and people. It’s a question of keeping our medical doctors and health authorities honest! It’s a question of seeking the truth on a matter which has devastated the entire nation. It’s a question of winning public trust and confidence into our ailing health sector. It’s a question of not allowing other patients dying under similar circumstances. That said, it’s imperative to note that Granny’s own son disagreed with her mum’s position. Mr. Mambouray clearly and intelligently argued on Freedom Radio that her mum’s method of approach towards the issue was rather unfortunate. She did not only harass, threaten, and vilify Pa Nderry M’Bai, she went as far as accusing Mr. M’Bai of being unpatriotic and brainwashing his audience with smear campaign stories against the status quo. Mr. Mambouray maintains that the issue of objective, and responsible reporting is paramount, but did stressed that he is not convince that Sailou Jallow died as a result of natural causes—opposed to her mum’s own position on the matter. Like all other concerned Gambians, Granny’son’s too wants this matter to be investigated and possibly justice be sought against the perpetrators of such a heinous crime. We are entirely in agreement with Mr. Mambouray. All we are asking for is: justice to prevail in Sailou’s case. Trust me Granny, if Sailou’s case is left uninvestigated, it will give room to the perpetrators to think that they are not responsible for any crime. This gives room to impunity. And do you know what does this mean for the Gambia? It means that more Sailou Jallow’s will die in the Gambia due to medical negligence. Granny overreacted by making false accusations against the Freedom Radio callers. She even dares accuses our good friend, and brother Pa Samba Jaw, and this Editor of not contributing towards Gambia’s development. She asked Pa Samba: What have you done for the Gambia--besides sitting in America criticizing the Government? Mr. Jaw responded by educating her about some of the humanitarian relief works he, and his colleagues in the USA are doing to help the poor and the needy in the Gambia. What Granny ought to realize is that one does not need to be physically resident in the Gambia to contribute his, or her quota to nation building. As rightly argued by Mr. Jaw, the Gambian diasporan community yearly monetary remittances back home, which is in the tune of over $8 Million US dollars is a clear testimony, and manifestation of our contribution to Gambia’s socio economic development. There is no one contributing towards Gambia’s development today more than those living outside the country. As it’s evident, the country is currently witnessing an infrastructural and economic collapse—thanks to Jammeh’s misguided handling of the economy and the country. So let Granny get her facts right before making unsubstantiated claims. In addition, some us have been contributing, and are still contributing our quota towards national development in the form of educational radio programs. We spend several thousands of dollars in trying to enlighten our people by way of radio programming, news reporting, and sound analysis of the misplaced policies of the regime in Banjul—which Granny is busy glorifying to the expense of her lost relative. Thanks to Granny, we now know that Sailou’s mum is against any postmortem to be conducted on the body of their loved one. Those responsible for Sailou’s death have been indemnified. In other words, the family is not interested in pursuing justice. Sailou has been buried without an autopsy carried out on him to establish his actual cause of death. Does Sailou deserve his death to be swept under the carpet? The answer is not mine. It’s yours Granny!
