Abdoulai, it is up to Africans to stop their confusion about religion. Islam and Muslims, just like other religious groups cannot have it both ways. And I do not want to hear that people misunderstood Islam or Muslims. Man got on the moon, so where is the eternal confusion about Islam and Muslims. Too many such groups have done worse in the name of religion and the practitioners as a community would be busy focusing on who is more holy than the rest. You think this is an issue among Africans, from Cape-town to Cairo? Naah! However, we are all over the place doing summersaults on what the west is doing or not doing. The rag tag you are talking about will get its way because we are paralyzed by religion. Africans themselves would be the first to call anything around them idolatry, but would raise their blood pressure to defend the same thing in another land. I can assure you that some of our on-line Mullahs side with these nuts and can never see the contradiction with sites in Mecca, Touba, and other places that they flock to. Race is in the center of what's going on and yes, I know the mullahs will come swinging about how Islam embraces all races as if they do not know what I am alluding to. As long as the African is confused about who they are and the role of religion in their daily life, we shall never get out of this circle. What are we, Africans, Our tribe, Our Religion? That is the question. Majority of our problems stem from this question.

The unwanton destruction of the religious and cultural relics in Timbuktu constitute barbaric desecration and an international crime.Any justification of these acts of insanity on religious grounds is unacceptable and unfounded.
Apart from The Unesco declaration of these sites as " cultural/heritage sites",it is sheer crash stupidity and vandalism to destroy 500 year old Tombs (home of 333 Sufi Saints),because these ignorant Fanatics beleive they are idolatrous and unacceptable in Islam.What about all the "rites of passage" and other Pilgrimage visits to similar sites in Saudi Arabia,considered obligatory during such visits.Are these sites to be desecrated too in the name of Islam?What about the pyramids of Egypt?could this be an act of Racial Jealousy against Black African historical achievement such as has happened to the sphinx in Egypt?
One would have hoped that the toothless African Union would have risen from her Slumber and help save these important Heritage sites for posterity.May be Ecowas is too busy begging the west to provide arms and ammunition to face a rag tag desert indisciplined gang of an army in Northern Mali.
