Suffice to saythat The Gambia has committed itself to allowing the independent press toflourish through a number of regional and international protocols andconventions. Matter of fact, at this point, it isquite unnecessary for us to launch into all those legal arguments to justify our decision to goahead with publications or condemn the actions of the state authorities. Whatwe want the government and the public at large to understand is that thispaper, published today, is not because we are by any means showing defiance. Wefeel that we are not convinced enough to cease operations, temporally orpermanently. And that by any standard, due process for the closure of aregistered newspaper company has not been followed. The authorities should notbe told what the due process is.
