Best regards,Yero Fund-raising & Solidarity in defense of Journalists Saidykhan & CeesayPosted on October 5, 2012 by adminWe Demand the Immediate unconditional Release of these citizens for following the law and exercising their Rights! The Gambia Gov’t Advocates against violence… Right
The Gov’t Executed Prisoners for killing other citizens..
The Gov’t prohibits demonstrations without a permit..
The Gov’t prosecute citizens who violate the law..
The Gov’t demands and expects every citizen to follow the law..
Now! when two Gambian Journalists Abubarcarr Saidykhan and Baboucarr Ceesay followed the law, applied for a permit to demonstrate as required by government they were arrested by Gambia’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA). Upon their arrest and subsequent detention beyond the stipulated law of 72 hours, the duo were charged with incitement to violence, conspiracy to commit felony and seditious intention after they followed the law and applied for a permit to peacefully demonstrate in the wake of the illegal executions of 9 death-row inmates in the Gambia.Even though the Gambian constitution protects citizens’ rights to demonstrate by obtaining a permit; even though Saidykhan and Ceesay followed the required procedure in applying for a permit, they were still arrested and are being prosecuted. Currently both are reporting to the NIA and are allegedly being subjected to extreme intimidation by the Gambian authorities. Their only crime is following the law and doing what good citizens do – obey the law of the land! The right of these citizens or any other citizen to follow the law must be defendedThe letters of the constitution must be followed not only by citizens but Gov’t as wellThe prosecution of citizens legally standing against their government must stopEvery conscious Gambian must realize what is at stake hereInjustice anywhere is injustice everywhere…On the face of this unprecedented action by the Jammeh government; we are soliciting citizens’ moral and financial contribution towards defending the rights of Saidykhan and Ceesay and by default all citizens for exercising their legal rights. Please be a part of history by standing up contributing any amount that you can towards defending what is morally and legally right. Use this right moment to tell the Jammeh government that they cannot have it both ways; condemn the killings of death-row inmates, the arbitrary arrest of innocent citizens, the closure of newspapers; community radio stations and the mocking of Gambia’s constitution by President Jammeh and his government. If you are concern about this trend and interested in contributing to defend citizen rights, please contact gainako editors as follows:Yero Jallow (Minneapolis, MN), Tel: 612-378-3166
