I read your rejoinder on Kibaaro news (http://kibaaro.com/?p=4731). It is a healthy debate in my view though I clearly see a great danger in some of Africa's military. If indeed tribalism has infiltrated Gambia's military as you claimed in your article, then it goes on to vindicate those arguing that there is indeed a level of indiscipline.  As if by coincidence, here is another sad situation of an innocent villager in the hands of brutal soldiers. Is it that these soldiers do not know their duties or are they not disciplined? Just about a year ago, we followed how a certain youth was also beaten to death. These are just some of the cases that made it to the media. I am sure there are many cases out there that don't get to be seen or heard off.

As a former army lietenant, I can see you defending the state of being a soldier. Clearly though, can we agree that indiscipline needs to be arrested in Africa's military especially that of the Gambia? Some of these bullies you will agree needs to nib it in the bud. Your thoughts as time permits...

Best regards,
Yero

Ansu Kurang a native of Kudang village in the Central River Region (CRR) , believed to be in his 30s, was reported severely beaten by three soldiers on Saturday 24th November 2012. He was said to be picked up at his guard post at the COMUIM station in Kudang at about 9pm.

A youth leader Nfally Saidy from Kudang village told The Daily News that said Ansu was arrested by one Alagie Jallow alias Alex a soldier at the Kudang camp, he was taken to the Army camp and two others join him in beating Ansu.

Ansu is a private security guard working for G4S, and posted at the COMUIM station in Kundang village. He was reported to the soldier by his mother in law. The Soldier was told that he Ansu does nothing for the wife and is a useless one for that matter. This is so far the only crime committed by Ansu.

Ansu was quoted of saying that, when the soldier came to his guard post he told him that he wanted to see him. That is how he was taken away to the camp. Narrating his story he said on arrival he was put in a small room un-knowing to the seniors of the camp. “He said he was stripped off his cloths and beaten by the three soldiers; he said his torture was videoed, by the soldiers.

He said after the beating he was asked to go with them to the shop so that he will buy some soap and other items for his wife. On arrival at the shop, because “I have no money I told the shopkeeper to borrow me who refuse, saying I still owe some money. Being afraid that they will take back to the camp without the items, I told to wait whiles I try someone in the compound. As they wait at the shop, I jump over the fence and ran in the bush. I had to trek more that 5km that night to spend the night in Makka a nearby village” he said.

Ansu was later seen in the outside of his native Kudang village and taken to the health center where he was seen by a doctor and medicines given. Later he was taken to the Imam’s house where One Mr. Colley a very senior man at the Army camp said the act was unlawful and that what his men did is wrong. He apologized on behalf of the men and promises the villagers that the men will be disciplined for the act.

A report reaching the Daily News is that the men have since being transferred to Farafeni camp. All efforts to reach the Army PRO to shed light on the matter proves unsuccessful.
