I am equally deeply saddened by the condition this honorable citizen is put through to the level of apologizing to the President. I know Althagie Dumbuya and his family. And I have never met such a private, kindhearted and dignified man who has made incredible difference in the lives of many poor Gambians. 

It is so outrageous that citizens would be put through such by their own families to go about apologizing to this so called President. What a disgrace for our nation... Mr. Dumbuya alone will never bow down to another human being in shame as he has worked all his life and but his business and dignity on his own.. God this is so mind bothering....

Baba, this man was arrested a while back, not sure for how long though and as he said he has no power or desire to fight at this tender age of 70. More like he is damned he did and very damned if he does not.

My question is: Was the Alhaji asked to apologize or threatened with punishment? Was he charged with the usual "giving false information to a public official"? If he merely felt guilty that he told an untruth, the one to apologize to is not Jammeh but God. He could have merely prayed two rakats or more and said as many Astaqfirullah as he could. That's certainly better than going public like this. Unless of course he is still expecting that Mr. Jammeh would feel sorry for him and extend his "usual kindness or compensation" to the old man. He can certainly do with some help from our pious moneybag. Thanks for sharing.

I guess the President and his team can high-five behind their palace wall now that 70 yr old Mr. Dumbuya has apologized and begged for their mercy!  It says a lot about the character of a government that uses the might of state against a 70 yr old petty trader.
And we wonder why Gambia scores a very unimpressive 34% on the Global Corruption Perception Index (CPI), dropping from rank 77 to 105 from 2011 to 2012.    To paraphrase a  Mandinka saying  " a guy who plays god at home is often wussy among his fellow men."

It looks like everything they call "ndam", heads straight to the proverbial  "Wall of shame".

One Alhaji Mustapha Dumbuya of Thomas Street in Banjul,has sent a letter of apology to the president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, for the incorrect and untruthful statement uttered during the president’s tour of the Albert Market.

The letter reads:

I humbly hereby write to apologise you for the incorrect and untruthful statement I have uttered during your visit to the Albert Market.

Sir, my statement that the store belonged to me was untrue. What I in fact, actually wanted to say was, I was the tenant for the store for over 20 years; and because I thought you would extend your usual kindness by way of compensation or gift to me, I got over excited and lied but I never intended to defraud you in any way. However, it was all my fault and I humbly ask for your forgiveness and pardon.

I am 70 years old and I have never done anything like this before. I have a large family and with my age, I am still the breadwinner for the family. I again apologise you for lying to you and I promise I shall never do such a thing again.
