Che, remember when Hitler, Amin, Mobutu, Stalin, and many other Butchers were doing their monster deeds, there was the "intellectual class" right there to co-sign and sing along, so, it is no different for Yaya. Please do not be fooled by the description - "Prominent Gambian Writer". Hustles come in various forms and age or education is not a barrier. Nana is among the many who are packaged and ready for sale in that country. These people have over time convinced themselves of the "Good Deeds" of Yaya, just like FOX News has told a lie some many times that they cannot live without it and can never separate themselves from it. To them, they had an audience with HE and the notoriety to drag along. They help convince Yaya that we have lost our minds and they think "They are Patriots" and are there to defend their "Good President". Even though they are right in that country and the many murders, disappearances, executions, tortures, and the rampant abuse of their fellow citizens.
"The book, he said, depicts the numerous development projects championed by the Jammeh administration."
Aahhhhh! Why is the book about the "Numerous Development Projects of the Jammeh Administration" as if that is the reality of the situation? For an educator, the students were massacred, why not about them; As a journalist, why not about Deyda, Chief Manneh, etc.; How about the latest - sacrifice of the 9 prisoners to his oracles; poisoning of hundreds to please his oracles, etc. You see where am headed with this. Do not be surprised that he (Nana) tells you that he is a Militant, for I have seen his type as old as Tati Perreh to Jaibalu to this Boy Murderer in Yaya and they have no qualms with it. They are also comfortable in their role for it is accepted by their families, friends, vous buddies, and the general environment. Contrary to what many here fight against, these guys and gals on the ground love the current set up for it temporarily favors them until the mad brain in Yaya calls their number and you see their loved ones all over place calling for a revolution.
Disclosure - Nana was my English / literature teacher at SAHS and someone I looked up to and he was a principled fellow. However, like many of our people, he has never missed an opportunity to hub nub with our Butcher (Their Friend). As citizens, we must draw the line no matter how we use to admire someone, are friends with or are related to one. Nana has crossed that line a long time ago and I for one will discuss him as evidenced by his transformation or adaptation. It is a shame but they are doing what they want to do and so the madness continues.
