Great Hadith Hous. Thanks for sharing. The problem is people who harbor grudges, envy, evil or spite in their hearts rarely know or acknowledge that they do. Humans are always able to justify their feelings and prejudices as absolutely right and innocent. A strange paradox.

Today's Hadith

Loaded with Potatoes

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was asked: “Who are the best type of people?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied: “A person who is truthful in his speech and Makhmoom in his heart.” People asked: “We know what is truthful speech, but what is a Makhmoom heart?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) responded: “It is a pure pious heart that does not have envy, evil or spite.” [Ibn Maajah]

A teacher told each child in her troublesome class to bring a plastic bag and some potatoes. Each child should put in their bag as many potatoes as the number of people they hated. Some brought two potatoes in a bag, some three and some up to five. The teacher then told the children to keep their potato containing plastic bags by their sides for a full week, carrying them with them wherever they went.

The days passed and the children began to complain as the potatoes started to rot and smell. Besides, those with more potatoes also had heavier bags to carry. The children were relieved when the week was over. Then the teacher told them the lesson they were to learn from this exercise. She said:

“This is what your situation is when you harbour grudges, envy or spite inside your heart. The stench of their evil goes with you wherever you go. Even if you can’t smell it anymore because you’ve gotten used to it, others you come in contact with will smell it, dislike it and want to stay away.”

Remember that the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said that the best type of people are those who are truthful in their speech and pure of envy, evil and spite.
