Neneh B Touray’s Feminist Column For The Gambia Daily News

Let me make a “controversial" statement right now...Ladies, sex does NOT ruin relationships. It DOESN'T! But at the same time, it doesn't STRENGTHEN relationships, either.

In other words, sex is NEUTRAL. It is the purpose BEHIND the sex that makes it ruin relationships. It is the purpose BEHIND the sex that makes it STRENGTHEN relationships.

So kindly, ask yourself: What is the purpose behind your urge to make love to him so soon? The the reason why early sex ruins so many relationships today is if the purpose behind it is not right.

Here are two of the biggest "wrong purposes" WHY early sex ruins relationships:

REASON #1 - THE GUY ONLY WANTS SEX

We all know how THIS happens, right? Many guys out there only want sex. That is their "purpose" - just to see you naked and get intimate with you. They will do anything for it. They will say what you want to hear, and do what you want -just to gain your trust, your sympathy... and ultimately, your love.

Nevertheless, once they have sex with you a few times - after they have gotten what they wanted from you - they suddenly lose interest. They stop calling. They stop asking you out. They are suddenly "just busy" at work. In addition, later on, you find out the man you "love" ...is going around with another woman. My condolences - you have just become a victim!

Subject: Books and Series on African Leadership

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past year we have been working to promote the study of African leadership in the academy. Considering the fact that leadership is the single biggest problem Africa faces, there is a need for more Africanist scholars to focus on understanding Africa's leadership cultures, challenges and crises. In that regard, I am happy to inform all colleagues that we have two edited volumes on African leadership scheduled to come out from Palgrave Macmillan in December 2014. The volumes, Leadership in Colonial Africa: Disruption of Traditional Frameworks and Patterns and Leadership in Post-Colonial Africa: Trends Transformed by Independence, are being used by Palgrave Macmillan to launch a new Palgrave Studies in African Leadership series. Our own Hassoum Ceesay has a very interesting chapter on chiefs in colonial Gambia in Leadership in Colonial Africa. Attached to this email are the covers for the two books and a flyer on the series, including an invitation to submit proposals on African leadership. Thanks all.

Warm regards,
Baba
