Amadou Sanneh, UDP, Appealed his Sedition Sentence at Court of Appeal, Alleging TortureShareAmadou Sanneh, the then National Treasurer of the United Democratic Party, appeared before Justice Emmanuel O.Fagbenle, the president of Court of Appeal, Justice Salla-Wadda and Justice Awa Bah of the Court of Appeal in Banjul to appeal against his conviction and sentence. Sanneh, who was convicted on two courts of sedition by the erstwhile Justice Nkea, then of the Special Criminal Court and jailed for 5 years on the 18 December 2013.The UDP strongman was convicted with three other UDP members after they alleged to have been severely tortured and detained incommunicado with no legal representation throughout with the other two without legal representation throughout the trial.Sanneh was alleged to have written a letter to support the asylum claims of Malang Fatty, claiming that Fatty had received death threats from the Gambian government. Malang Fatty was arrested at the border post of Amdalia, as he tried to leave the country. Sanneh was arrested six days later with Alhagie Sambou Fatty, the brother of Malang, who the authorities alleged asked Sanneh to write the letter for Malang. Malang and Alhagie were held in incommunicado for two months without charge and were allegedly tortured and forced to confess on live national TV.President Jammeh then went on the national TV to rebuke opposition parties and their supporters. “Tarnishing the image of this country is treasonable and all those engaged in this would pay a high price. Hating one’s country is ungodly. In any religion mounting a smear campaign against one’s country on behalf of outside powers is TREASON," the President said. His conviction drew widespread criticism from human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, who claimed that the three are all prisoners of conscience and called for their immediate and unconditional release. “These convictions confirm exactly what the opposition has claimed all along: that the Gambian government persecutes its opponents. Charges of sedition and false information are being used to curtail freedom of expression and legitimate dissent,” said Aster van Kregten, Deputy Africa Director at Amnesty International.Read MoreComment (0)Hits: 23
