Behind close doors even those supposedly well placed in Banjul will tell you it's really bad. That's not because they are not riding public vehicles, signing their paycheck and maybe even looting anything within their sight.

Yet for 50 years (lets say 20 years if we consider discount PPP era) we failed as citizens to take corrective political actions when needed.

Since after the 1st election of the 2nd Republic - I advocated for a change in strategy based 'The Problem' and not 'The Effects'. I argued Yahya is not 'The Problem' although he's a real bad guy but so too many of us. Some thought and even told me - am out of my mind while others think he (Yahya) is a relation because of the same last name. For the later, my origin is Badibou - end of that story.

Since after the foiled attempted coup - we seem to be quieter than ever across the board. the same seem to be true after such big eventualities such as Student Demonstration, Demonstrations along the route of Yahya's motorcade in New York, Gambia DC Mission siege, etc. Am afraid despair is setting in if not already. This is because we boxed ourselves to a wrong goal hence wrong actions/programs that cul-de-sac us

Until we go back to the base (some consider that a waist of time) and redefine the problem - 'No Independent Democratic Republic' we will likely not have a solution. That means sporadic noises anytime something exciting happens

Had we pursued the fact our nation was created 'Independent Democratic Republic'; the attaining of that will get rid of all undemocratic individuals and actions including Yahya. It will build the capacity of our citizens to becoming democratic creatures living that lifestyle, expect and demand such from their representatives. Such citizens cannot be wagon cheap rhetorics such as those of Yahya's. Here we are bunkered on the all approaches that didn't work over 50(20) years and counting - elect X or Y and s/he will fix it. Look the structure itself is bad, is an enabler and once there instead of changing it - they want to enjoy it by exploiting it further. Above all the citizens have no or little capacity to play their role. By chance this approach may one a while change individuals but certainly it will not yield a functioning democratic governance.

My appeal is for all to take another look at the issues - hope that will give us another opportunity to comeback to the drawing board to craft a political program based on our very founding creed (Independence, Republic & Democracy). That agenda neither differentiate us nor is it anchored on anyone's ascension. More importantly that is the only legitimate claim that no one can counter argue the definition.

Remember we will always differ on choice who should lead/rule our nation but not on 'Independence, Republic & Democracy'.

Hope we do right so history can be kind to us!
