Today The Gambia is 49 years old.

It was this day in 1970 that every single Gambian was no longer a slave and subject of Her Imperial Majesty the Queen of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It was on this day that every single Gambian became equal to the other.

It was this day that the territorial integrity of The Gambia was restored.

It was on this day that a Gambian became a President and a commander in Chief.

It was this day that real independence was achieved.

This is the most important day in our history and yet it is not even a holiday. Gambia, it is time to wake up!
