Hi folks, I'm afraid I have to agree with many of you who wrote expressing your suspicion that "Kebba Ceesay" IS Matarr Njie in Malaysia. A Gambia-L subscriber brought the issue to my attention yesterday, and told me that the following was what he found when he checked out the [log in to unmask] address: > MIMOS (NET-JARING-NAT) > Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems > 7th Floor, Exchange Square > Off Jalan Semantan > 50490 Kuala Lumpur > MALAYSIA > > Netname: JARING-NAT > Netnumber: 161.142.0.0 > > Coordinator: > Awang-Lah, Mohamed B (MBA-ARIN) [log in to unmask] > 60-3-9662800 (FAX) 60-3-9660245 > > Domain System inverse mapping provided by: > > JARING.MY 192.228.128.20 > MIMOS.MY 192.228.128.18 > GATE1.JARING.MY 161.142.2.17 > GATEN.JARING.MY 161.142.227.17 > GATES.JARING.MY 161.142.212.17 > > Record last updated on 27-Sep-1996. > Database last updated on 25-Oct-1999 16:04:14 EDT. > A check of a posting from "Kebba Ceesay" and an e-mail from Matarr Njie indicates that they both originated from the same IP Number, namely, 161.142.78.83. I also found that "Kebba Ceesay" was subscribed to Gambia-L just about 3 days ago, Oct. 24th, to be exact. I don't know which Gambia-L subscription manager subscribed him, because subscription and error messages that the list generates to me are automatically deleted after I'm done reading my mail. However, I would advice all Gambia-L managers to from now on pay particular attention to the headers of requests for subscription. In particular, we should not honor any request for subscription from the Malaysia IP Numbers, 192.*. and 161.* as indicated above. Genuine requests from the above addresses will be verified by some other means, such as a known third party supporting the request for subscription. For your information, you can look at the IP numbers in your e-mail messages by either one of the following procedures: 1. With Microsoft Internet Mail and News (I don't have and don't want Outlook) a) Hightlight the message by clicking on it once b) In the menu bar, click on FILE, then PROPERTIES, and the click on the DETAILS tab. You will then see the header information displayed thus: > Received: from smtp1.chorus.net (smtp.itis.com [209.83.0.138]) > by mail.chorus.net (8.9.3/8.8.8) with ESMTP id EAA11647 > for <[log in to unmask]>; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 04:52:01 -0500 (CDT) > Received: from maelstrom.stjohns.edu (maelstrom.stjohns.edu [149.68.1.24]) > by smtp1.chorus.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/Chorus Networks) with ESMTP id EAA15665 > for <[log in to unmask]>; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 04:52:01 -0500 (CDT) > Received: from maelstrom.stjohns.edu (149.68.1.24) by maelstrom.stjohns.edu (LSMTP for > > OpenVMS v1.1a) with SMTP id <[log in to unmask]>; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 > 5:50:48 - 0500 > Received: from MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU by MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU (LISTSERV-TCP/IP > release 1.8c) with spool id 5133243 for > [log in to unmask]; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 05:50:44 -0400 > Received: from web1703.mail.yahoo.com (128.11.23.214) by maelstrom.stjohns.edu > (LSMTP for OpenVMS v1.1a) with SMTP id > <[log in to unmask]>; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 5:50:43 -0500 > Received: from [161.142.78.83] by web1703.mail.yahoo.com; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 > 02:55:47 PDT > MIME-Version: 1.0 Please note that I've added the greater than symbol (>) in the above quote to set it apart from my message. Also, note that in the originating IP number (161.142.78.83) is listed in the last line before the MIME-Version info. Similarly, the destination address is always on the first line. 2. Netscape Messager: a) Click once on the message to highlight it b) On the menu bar, click on VIEW, then HEADERS, and then ALL to view all the header information of the message. c) Look for the field called the X-Originating-IP to locate where the mail came from If you're not sure where the IP number belongs, copy and paste it in the search engines to the Asia-Pacifi Network Information Center (APNIC) at: http://www.apnic.net/apnic-bin/whois.pl or at ARIN at: http://www.arin.net/whois/arinwhois.html By the way, I will be deleting the "Kebba Ceesay" address, to avoid any further attempts by Matarr to send mail to the list. I would advice to save himself the trouble of impersonating and using different names to get on Gambia-L. In any case, our list postings are accessible to the public, as indicated at the bottom of this posting. All he has to do is visit our archives once in a while to keep abreast of our discussions, and he can then do whatever he wants to. But he cannot refuse to accept common rules of decency and good manners, and at the same time expect the same previlidges as those who do, or at least try to. One final, and unrelated note. Please refrain from sending subscription requests to the list. You'll probably notice that no one does anything about such requests because I've indicated a number of times here that such requests should be sent directly to the list managers. Besides, every posting on Gambia-L has information about how to unsubscribe/subscribe and/or read our archives, and so there's no excuse for people to keep sending such requests to the list. I suppose that's about all for now. Have a great week, and best wishes.
