There a strong relationship between Hypothyroidism and a wide  variety of
psychiatric problems in general.  In the 1830's the  connection between
Hypothyroidism and mental illness was well known; and by  1888, a landmark paper on the
topic was written by the Clinical Society of  London. Some patients showed
dementia that would be easy to mistake for  Alzheimer's Disease, and others
showed a host of other abnormalities.

I, personally, have seen many patients over the years who were mistakenly
diagnosed as having Alzheimer's or other mental disorders, but who were actually
 Hypothyroid. Quite often, the "mental illness" resolved when the
Hypothyroidism  was treated.

After years of work on several locked, inpatient, psychiatric units; I find
that Hypothyroidism severe enough to cause the particular mental disorder  is
routinely ignored in patients. Hypothyroidism is one more simple and
inexpensive to treat illness that is routinely ignored in favor of some  expensive,
still on patent drug that doctors have been brainwashed into  believing is
indicated.
