Nick,

I believe with conviction in what the "Unconscious" "Ego and "Id" point to:
Aspects of our thinking (fantasies, desires, fears, etc.) of which we are
unaware. I just don't believe that the mind is comprised of concrete "parts"
in the sense that Id, Ego, or Unconscious would imply. I understand these
concepts as metaphors, for aspects of the mind. The concept of compromise
formation would suggest that in any behavior, thought, or feeling--we can
find Id, Ego, and Superego phenomena, all blended together with a certain
unity of expression in consciousness as a whole, in the way that Brenner
discusses it. Too often, we speak of the Ego, Id, etc. as if these are
discrete entities in the mind or brain that can be literally labeled. I
think this is a part of the reason why Brenner feels it is time that we let
go of (or at least revise) structural theory, though I myself am not so
certain about that at this time.
