A new 1.3 version of SCREADER screen reader for Linux is
available for download at the blinux FTP site under
ftp://leb.net/pub/blinux/screader


Screader can use any text to speech synthesizer to speak out
the screen through your sound card if the software synthesizer
accepts piped in ASCII code. Use it with FESTIVAL speech system or
MBROLA synthesizer plus text to phoneme script (hello FREESPEECH
developers, when will be Christmas time?).


Main SCREADER features are:
Easy switch to different synthesizers using <Alt-r>.

Simple configuration through human readable configuration file.

Line Speak <Alt-l> will speak out every line which is pointed to by
the line pointer after typing.

Switch on Auto Speak <Alt-a> to let SCREADER speak out every
character being typed.

Screen Speak <Alt-w> speaks out the whole screen.

Since SCREADER is based on the SCREEN package, it understands all
SCREEN commands too.

SCREADER is IMHO a key application for users who are blind.
Future releases will also include source code. Reponse time of
SCREADER depends on the speed of the speech synthesizer which is used
and needs still improvement (at least on my 486DX100 board).
