Ken,

I agree with Bruce. I would suggest discussing with Don Friedman too!
I have discussed this with him and recall that the rivets work in both
shear and tension. Rivets are installed and peened over while hot and
when they cool they shrink so go into tension and develop friction
between the joined plates as well as filling the rivet holes and work in
shear as well. I suspect you could develop data on the specific rivets
with chemical and coupon type tests other than basic tension.

Regarding your last question I'm no expert on rivets but it is my
impression that they work best in shear.  

I would also ask your engineer if he wants the field-formed end
preserved or the other one.  I'm not sure how easy it will be to tell
the difference.  There could be slight differences in the work hardening
of the two. 

Getting back to your "samples for what?" question is he going test the
shaft of the rivets or the heads or both?
