I was upset because I really thought that Kathy Jo Pink wanted to kill 
herself.  I began to emphasize with her because I know what it is like to 
live in an adult living center.  When Kathy revealed that she did not to 
die, I felt relieved, but angry.  Kathy should have been more specific and 
sensitive in her posts.

While I agree suicide is a very serious topic, not talking about it doesn't
make it go away.  As someone who has considered (and rejected) suicide as an
option, IMHO, talking about it openly can be helpful for others that may be
considering it.  It gives them the opportunity to say "me too," in a
non-threatening environment, and connect with others who can help them in
their time of need.  There is a small body of research that says talking
openly about suicide encourages others to consider it, but a larger body of
research that says that it provides a safe environment to seek help for
those who are considering it.  The University I work for has a program
called "Gatekeepers" for people who may come into contact with those who may
be considering suicide.  I belong to the Gatekeepers group, and have had one
individual come talk to me openly about their concerns, and was able to
connect them with resources that helped them through their crisis.

Much of the research that waas used in the "Gatekeeper" training focuses on
adolescent suicide ideation, since many in the college population aren't far
from that age group.  This tinyurl leads to a an abridged version of a book
on suicide prevention among adolescents.  The findings in general, are
applicable, to a large extent, to other populations as well.

As far as watching the MDA Telethon, NO!  It focuses on pity for people with
disabilities rather than the positive things that people with disabilities,
can, and have accomplished.  Stephen Hawking, has ALS (Lou Gehrig's
disease), which is one of the conditions covered under the MDA umbrella.
While his life would have been quite different without the disease, he is a
prime example of what can be accomplished with a serious disability.  A
former college professor I took severral classes from, and am now fortunate
enough to call a friend, lost his wife to ALS a couple of years ago.  While
they received benefits from MDA, they rejected the approach the telethon
uses to solicit funds.  An interesting statistic is that only 30 percent of
MDA's funding comes through the telethon.   A quote from Jerry Lewis from
several years ago was "You don't want pity for being a cripple?  Stay in
your House!"  That told me all I ever need to know about Jerry's attitude
toward people with disabilities.
