Hello all.

My 2 ½ year-old son has been gluten-free for over a year. Unfortunately, we
were told to make him gluten-free before his biopsy in April 2003. He was
gluten-free for three weeks prior to his biopsy and for four weeks prior to
his blood work.

We have been advised by two pediatric GIs (who don’t work in the same
practice) that we should do a gluten challenge. They recommend two slices
of bread (or equivalents) per day with follow-up blood work in four months.
Of course, we will stop if there are obvious signs he is failing the
challenge. The rationale for the challenge is that none of my son’s testing
has been definitive for celiac. He did improve considerably on the gf diet.
But my son also has multiple food allergies which could have been clouding
the clinical picture.

Here are my questions:

If a child fails a gluten challenge how soon will the parents know?

Do you start with two pieces of bread the first day or start with smaller
quantities and increase slowly?

Is there any chance he’ll outwardly appear to be doing well but in actuality
will be doing damage?

Any other advice?

Thanks in advance to all who will respond. We are quite anxious about this
so if anyone wants to say a prayer for little Anthony we’d appreciate that,
too.
