Hi -

We;ve used Duncan Hines brand (classic chocolate and white frostings in a can)
successfully. However, my husband does NOT have a hair-trigger allergy, and
I'm pretty sure that both frostings are run on a dairy line.

Beth Kidder's cookbook (The Milk Free Kitchen) has a couple of frosting
recipes that look pretty good. Her cookbook is generally reliable. But
I usually go the easy way and buy a can of the stuff.

Frosting tip from the cake decorating class I took: Too keep crumbs from
getting all over the cake, put a big dollop of frosting on the cake and
spread from the center of the dollop to the edges. Now put another dollop
of frosting **on the existing, spread frosting.** Spread from the already-
frosted part towards the unfrosted part. This way your spreader doesn't pick
up crumbs. You can even frost sliced-off bits of cake successfully this way.
