Try opening the file in notepad. Sometimes the file will have an indication in the first few lines as to what type of file it is, even if most of it looks like hieroglyphics. Microsoft Office 10/Excel uses .xlsx as the default extension, not .xls. I have both Acrobat Readers and Irvanview running and neither will open the file.
