It looks like I removed the virus the first time, and the errors were
because the installers required xp sp3. the installation disk still refuses
to use the whole disk. I used easus partition manager to wipe the
"unallocated" space just in case, then expanded the primary partition
(which I didn't expect to work because of a previous experience, but it
did).
PS. although they won't tell you, most programs and windows update require
xp sp3 (I found out the hard way).
